If you missed Part 1 of my holiday, please click here!
We started with a lazy Sunday morning at Broekhaven Cottage…and then my humans decided to go on another big walk.
This time they picked Hongi’s Track, which is near Lake Rotoiti (“Roto-eetee”).
It is a “bush walk” through trees and plants which are natural to New Zealand, not from other places.
This means that there are lots and lots of ferns, of course!
We walked and walked for a long time and met some other people on the track, including a family who were on those strange things called “bicycles”.
There were so many interesting smells everywhere! I ran around with my nose stuck to the ground all the time.
Hongi Hika was a famous Maori warrior who walked through the bush with his men, carrying their ‘wakas’ (canoes) on their way to attack another Maori village – so that is why this path is named after him.
Finally, we came out of the trees and saw a beautiful lake! This was Lake Rotoiti.
But you will never guess what we found beside the lake! A little baby hedghog!
Hsin-Yi was worried about him because it was nearly lunchtime and very sunny – and hedghogs are not usually out in daylight unless they are sick. Also, he was just lying there – he did not curl up into a ball when she touched him.
So she decided to take him back to Broekhaven Cottage with us. Luckily, one of the humans living at Broekhaven Farm helps the Rotorua SPCA rescue animals and she already had 3 other hedgehogs she was looking after…
Hsin-Yi decided to name him “Truffles”…
After dropping Truffles off back at the farm, we tried to find another nice cafe in town to have lunch…but just as we got out of the car, a grumpy man came up to us and told us that dogs are banned from Rotorua town centre – and if you don’t listen, then they make you pay a “$700 instant fine”!!
My humans were very surprised and we quickly said sorry and left. Thank goodness we didn’t get caught yesterday! We just didn’t know because we don’t live in Rotorua. One of the reasons is because Rotorua is a “tourist city” which means that many humans like to go there with their camera machines and look at the stinky hot water – and so they want to keep the town centre clean and beautiful, with no dog poo!
Hsin-Yi says it is very annoying when some bad dog owners don’t pick up after their dogs and then they spoil it for all of us, because then people just don’t want us dogs there anymore.
Anyway, so we came back to the cottage and had our own “cafe lunch” at the table outside instead. And Hsin-Yi said it was actually much nicer and more relaxing for them because whenever I go out with them, people and children are always coming up all the time to pat me and ask questions about me.
Of course, my humans are very proud of me and very thankful that people like me but they would also like to have some time for themselves and eat their lunch. This never happens if I am there – people keep coming up, all the time – sometimes they even make a queue to pat me! It is nice to get all this attention but Hsin-Yi feels stressy because a lot of children run up and do silly things to me sometimes – so she has to supervise us all the time (you know, even the nicest, most tolerant dog must be supervised with children all the time!). Many human parents don’t teach their children how to behave with us dogs and so they can do silly things which frighten us and make us snap.
(In fact, I forgot to tell you yesterday – when I was lying by the table at the Japanese cafe, a little boy ran up and jumped on me! I was very surprised but I was very good and I didn’t snap at him – and Hsin-Yi praised me a lot and gave me treats for being so patient. But she says a lot of dogs would have jumped up and maybe bit him, because they were scared – and then they would have been blamed, even though it was not their fault.
This is why Hsin-Yi always spends so much time socialising me so I learn not to get scared of many things and so I am “bomb-proof”. She also asks nice children to feed me treats so I think children always bring me nice things, and then I like them a lot and don’t mind if sometimes, they do silly things to me.
Sometimes my humans say that this is one of the reasons why maybe they would not get another Great Dane after me – because they always wanted to take their dog with them to cafes but they don’t enjoy doing it with me, because of all the attention.)
After lunch, we decided to take a late-afternoon walk by Lake Rotorua.
The sun was just going down so everything was covered in a lovely light…
Then we had a cosy evening in the cottage…
The next day was our last and we had to start driving back to Auckland – but first, my humans decided take me on a last walk. We went to the Whakarewarewa Forest , off Long Mile Road, Rotorua - this is a beautiful forest only 5 mins drive from the town centre and with lovely, wide flat paths to walk on so even humans that are old or pushing babies in moving boxes can enjoy it.
And then it was time to go home!
We went back to the cottage and said good-bye to all the animals and the nice humans and Nick & Tipp, the farm dogs…
…and then we squeezed everything back into our small car machine again and started driving back to Auckland!
There were many other car machines on the road again so it took us a long time to get home but I was so tired, I didn’t really care – I was just snoring and dreaming about my wonderful holiday!

Another great post – so sorry about the no dogs allowed rule. Your humans are very good to take such good care to teach you to behave so well. Too bad all pupowners don’t do the same.

I love that last photo of you two by the lake, just perfect! Sounds like you had a really fun time, that’s great you are allowed to go in some of the National Parks, we aren’t really allowed to here in Australia but there are some parks called State Forests that allow dogs and horses. Those trees are massive! I will have to go back to NZ one day and see all this stuff, I was born there but left when I was 3.
I’m amazed with your photos, Honey! And that “dogs not allowed” situation is revolting.
Kisses from Rufus and Indie
What a beautiful place! And that last photo is wonderful.
I can’t believe a whole town centre is off limits to dogs! Seems so wrong.
Can’t leave out the hedgehog….sooo cute!
Oh my!
It is all so beaWOOtiful!
Tank woo fur sharing all of it with us! It sooo makes us want to go there but the flight to NZ from here takes like an entire dogyear!
Woo and your pawrents are to be khommended fur your words about khanines and little bipeds…my mom tries to enforce it is okay to ask to pet a khanine and greet them with open hands at their level!

Thanks for showing us those beautiful photos of your vacation Honey! I think all the ferns make a good background for you.
Good job with the little kids. It is so difficult when adult people don’t supervise the little ones properly. I’m glad you got lots of treats.
Your friend,
Niamh
Wow! Another great post! Whakarewarewa Forest looks gorgeous!! Our humans might start planning their trip to Rotorua with us soon, or we hope so
Hsin-Yi is a really really kind human, rescuing a sick hedgehog. There are so many things we can learn from you and your humans!
Another fabulous post! I LOVE the photo of you by the lake, looking up towards the sky. Just beautiful. The last pic with your Mom is great too. What a wonderful holiday.
As usual, your photos and words are gorgeous, Honey. Aren’t you lucky to have such wonderful humans to take you away on holiday to so many interesting places? And I am sure they feel lucky to have you joining in on the fun. It looks like a very relaxing holiday, and I might take my family there myself one day.
Hi, Honey!
All those pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing them!
No dogs allowed?? I see those signs all over here!
Kisses and hugs

Hi Honey (and Hsin-Yi and Paul!) – we’re just recovering after our op (well, okay then, we’re hamming it up a bit now for extra sympathy from our humans and it’s working!) so reading our friends blogs is really cheering us up. Lovely photos and what a good girl you are for always being so patient with untrained human pups. It’s not fair when the humans don’t train their litters and just expect us dogs to put up with it. We loved the photo of you and Truffles, so cute! You probably need to put your paws up for a few days after such an exciting holiday, thank you so much for sharing it with us all. Tail wags – JD and Max.
What a great post, what a great post!
Beautiful pics, really artistic, even the done-with-the-timer ones!
Thank you for these wonderful moments!
Love

Honey you are such a good doggie! That vacation looks like it was a lot of fun and very relaxing! Mom does not really like to take us places either. She says that people here try to call s pitt bulls, and that they get upset when they see us. They have no idea that we are Boxers and that we have nothing in common with them. She also thinks it is mean to put a breed in the bad category. We are really excited about our award and are going to try to work on it this weekend! Thanks!
Kisses

Woowoowoowoooo dear Honey!!!

Seems so wrong and incredible….gosh!!!!!!
thanks for sharing with us these wonderful photos!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet kisses!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great holiday! I can’t believe you met a hedgehog! I have never met one in real life….it looked friendly. Hope it gets well taken care of.
Good job for not snapping at the little jumper boy. I am pretty good too but you are right, we should always be supervised because who knows what those little ones may do to cause us to “snap”.
My Mom has taken me to meet school children too and just yesterday I got to play with two kids. One was pulling my tail and pinching me but I didn’t bite him….he’s not even two yet. Mom quickly intervened and made sure I was ok and I just kept running away from him whenever he would waddle near.
Thanks for sharing your holiday…such a beautiful place.

Hi Honey. Thank you for the socialization suggestions. Mommy said she might try that. I’m not overly fearful of other humans, just wary of them. So she thinks asking me to sit is a good idea. I disagree. I think they should just give me the treat for free. Anyway thanks for making it sound so simple. Maybe Sunday when she doesn’t have to go to work we will go.
BTW glad you had a great holiday and Mommy says she really wants one of those hedgehog things.
GOD! this is beautiful!!! U are so lucky Honey! we don’t have any beautiful places here that are dog friendly here.
ANd you are right about a few dog owners spoiling the reputation of all dogs, and limiting where they can go. Sighz..
Great pictures!! We hope we can go there too…
Honey, first of all we missed you!
We’re glad that you had a wonderful holiday with your humans. You made a trip to booootiful place. We were happy to read your update until you mentioned about ‘dog not allowed’ stuff. Mmm.. we should be allowed to do whatever we want! Anyway you are So good doggie and we’re proud of you.:)
Momo & Pinot
PS: We (actually our typist= mom) misspelled your name on our friends’ list and we just corrected.
Hi Honey
We loved seeing all the pictures and hearing about your adventures while on holiday. What a beautiful place you visited.
Have a good weekend.

Hi Honey and Hsin-Yi,
You can easily find target sticks with a clicker, which we told you about, by googling “Click Stick” (along with additional keywords like “dog” or “training”). Hope it helps!
Just a correction. The correct name of the target stick is “Clik Stik”:-)
Honey,
Please help!
Axl, Autumn’s little brother has accidently bumped his head and has been very sick after that: vomit, seizure, hasn’t eaten for a week, please, I’m begging you to visit Autumn’s blog to support her and sending positive power to help for a good recovery!

What a wonderful holiday you had with your family, Honey!
That place is beautiful and your pictures are lovely! Thanks for sharing with us those precious moments!
Love,
Thor
It’s lovely that you were staying at a place that could take care of the hedgehog!
We’re sad that so many places are not dog-friendly anymore.
It isn’t as fun for the dogs who are well-behaved!
Whenever my husband and I get to New Zealand, we’ll definitely put this down as a destination spot!

Thanks for sharing that most fabulous vacation, Honey. What a beautiful part of the world. And Happy Belated Birthday to Hsin-Yi!
Isn’t it a shame that people don’t teach their children how to behave with dogs? When my parents eat outside, lots of people come over to me also and I am always nice. Luckily I haven’t had any badly-behaved children, though. I think your Mama is very wise to train you to be patient with them. No dogs allowed?? Hmmm. It’s not the dogs who aren’t clean – it’s their owners. The sign should say “No dirty dogowners allowed.”
Beautiful picture of you and your Mama.

I used that weight thingie and I am 41 years old. Thank you for sharing that nice movie of your vacation. Those sheepies sure looked like fun. I wonder if the goat made funny sounds.
That picture of you with your mom is just beautiful.

Hi Honey!! The second part of your holiday looked even better than the first, if that is possible!! It looks like you had an amazing time with your humans. You had some lovely walks, NZ looks like a wonderful country. My mummy has a friend who moved there a few years ago and mummy always ooh and ahhs at her photographs!!
Mummy and daddy are taking us on a holiday in May, this will be Hazel’s first ever holiday but we is experienced holiday doggies!!
I hope you get to go again really soon, cos it looks like you all had some lovely walks, fresh air and relaxation!!

Yet another fabulous post Honey! Don’t know where to begin with this…we love it all! How cool that you got to meet a cute little hedgehog, you didn’t get your snooter prickled did you?
We are very impressed with the size of those trees, they’e massive!
And our favourite pic of you is the one under the one when you’re meeting the nice children, you look beautiful!
We’re so behind again that we’re getting two posts here, yippee….we’re off to watch your video now
