This has been a very sad week for me because my boyfriend and Best Friend, Ombre the Standard Schnauzer, has gone to live in a far away place called Toronto. His human family has decided to go and live there instead of New Zealand and so, of course, Ombre has gone with them.
I shall miss him very, very much 
Ombre and I are the bestest friends. We met in puppy class and it was love at first sight.
People couldn’t believe it because we’re so different: I’m so big and he’s so little, I’m so dumb and dopey, and he’s so smart and cheeky!
But we are perfect together -

Ombre & I met when we were 6 months old but sadly, we don’t have any pictures of us together when we were still little, because my humans were always too stressy and busy hanging on to me (I was in my ‘naughty time’) to take any pictures. Here is one of the earliest photos I have! (you can see that Ombre was still in his ‘puppy coat’ before he got his handsome, grown-up Schnauzer clip…but I think he looks really cute like this too!)

One of the things I love best about Ombre is that I can play really rough with him and he doesn’t mind. (Did you see the bit in the video where I smacked into him and threw him to the ground…and he just bounced right up again?) 
Especially as a puppy, I was so rough and boisterous when I was playing that a lot of doggies would be scared of me.
Ombre was the only pup who could handle me!
In fact, he plays even rougher than me and when we wrestle, he wins every time! 
A lot of people think it is size that decides if dogs become good playmates but actually, it’s personality – Ombre is confident and bossy and in his mind, 10 times bigger than me!
I have met big dogs who are timid and nervous - and start crying if I try to go over to say hello! (or get fear aggressive and want to attack me) – and I have a lot of friends who are tiny, little dogs (like Bertie the Pug) who play really well with me because they are confident and sociable.
With Ombre…I’m always just trying to keep up!

The other great thing about Ombre is that his human is like my human and she also makes lots of time to do stuff with him. So aside from playdates, we also get to do lots of other fun things together…

The cutest thing about Ombre is his little round bum with his knobby little tail stump – especially when he does a ‘play bow’ and puts his bum in the air (you can see this in the video!)
He also likes to back up and push his bum into my face to try and get me to play with him – it is so cute to watch! (did you see this in the video? When I was lying on the bed and he kept pushing his bum and wagging tail at me! )

I’m a very sociable dog and so I have lots of doggie friends but none of them are like Ombre.
My humans say our friendship is special – something that happens once in a lifetime – and it is so wonderful to watch us together.
I really hope that Ombre will be happy in his new home and make lots of new doggie friends. But I hope he won’t forget me.
I will think of him and our happy times together…and miss him – always.

My human used to live in Brisbane, but she thinks it's too hot and humid, and prefers Melbourne. My Grand(hu)ma lives in the Sunshine Coast, which is near Brisbane. She has two Miniature Schnauzers, and they like living there a lot.
I haven't been there yet, but my human thinks maybe one year we will drive up at Christmas. It will take a few days of driving, though, so we will have to make sure there are places we can stay overnight on the way. I like travelling in the car, and I will help my human drive by preventing her from getting drowsy with my loud snoring.

I loved when he was putting his bum against you in the video to get you to play…very funny! He is one tough Schnauzer too getting knocked down and bouncing back up and the way he would get between your legs and under you and the two of you would play bitey face was soooo sweet.

Thank you for your kind and encouraging comments on Jackal's blog. I do keep his attention heeling to very, very short lesson, then I give him the release command and we run and play and explore the rest of the walk. I just realized when I take both of the dogs on their walk together I'm usually focused on Storm and ignore Jackal, so I think it'll be more beneficial this way.
I know I wasn't supposed to chase him around the car that day. I let my temper get away from me. I guess that's why I was beating myself up so much. I really don't like when I slip. Especially with something I've known is wrong since I was a little girl. You never chase the dog, horse, etc. if you want to catch it lol.
Also I wanted to ask, what kind of training treats do you use? I normally use kibble, but I don't like to carry it in my pocket because it gets kind of greasy and slimy. Hot dogs are the same about getting slimy. I'm having so much trouble finding a treat that is healthy, but keeps my pockets relatively clean and dry.
Thank you for your tips on teaching the recall. When I got Storm I guess I had read so many times that you can't teach a Siberian Husky to come that I never really tried to teach her. And I guess my aversion to recall training bled over into Jackal's training. I've never actually done any formal recall training with him, except with the whistle, because I can't use the word "Come". I use the word too much. I wanted a word that I never use so that I couldn't abuse it. That's why I chose Ici (French for "here").
Thank you again for your encouragement. I'll keep working at it and try to remember to have fun with it.

I'm sorry your friend is leaving. You two had loads of fun! I'm sure we'll have heaps of fun when you come here. I can't believe it. I'm going to meet Honey! Of course, I still have to be patient as you are not coming yet.
I wasn't in the least bit offended by your comments. Even with the things I already know, it's helpful to hear again because I forget the simplest things all the time. In fact when I have a problem the answer is usually quite simple, I just forget about it if that makes any sense lol.
Also the idea of putting the sausages in the oven is genius! I'll have to try that because the microwave just doesn't dry them out enough unless you almost burn them. Kibble actually works great for Jackal because he is so food motivated, but another reason I don't like using them is because he chokes on them all the time! Especially if I ask him to bark right after eating one. I've heard stories of dogs choking to death on kibble, so that's why I started using the hot dogs.
