Learning the “marching legs” trick…

A couple of my friends have been asking how I learnt to “march” with my human, Hsin-Yi, when we do our Canine Freestyle dancing so I thought I’d make a video to show you how I learnt this trick!

HY+Honey-frontsit-marchIt’s really easy to learn and looks really cute – even if you don’t do doggie dancing, why don’t you give it a try?

(And post a video on your blog showing us how you did! :) )

Trick training is a really nice way to bond with your humans and even though it is not “serious” like Obedience type stuff, it is still helping you learn to  focus on your human and follow cues/commands and work together…and most of all, have fun together!

Wow -- thanks Honey, that looks amazing! We're gonna ask our human if we can try that. Hsin-Yi is a great trainer but what a clever girl you are to pick it all up. How daft that some folks claim certain dogs are 'untrainable' -- humph! Tail wags -- JD and Max.

  2. Pipa says:

Honey, let me tell you this, Hsin-Yi should open a doggie school! She could have really cool dancing classes for dogs… how cool is this? Plus, she could do a training forum site, she always answers so quickly and she knows it all about doggie training!

you're very lucky to have Hsin-Yi, Honey. But of course, she's even luckier to have such a fantastic and surprising lady like you!

    Love

    Pipa

PS: did you get my mail??

  3. Suzuki says:

Mummy said she is going to try this with Scooby when he gets his "cone" off his head :)
    Big licks to you

Mom says she is going to try and teach me this, I can already do the shake with opposite paws so it might not be too hard. She is on vacation so we have plenty of time to work on it. Starting on Monday!!! wish me luck

  5. Ludo says:

ooh we will give this a go, thanks for the tutorial!

  6. Ana says:

Hi Honey! We will try and then we will post of course so you can score us!:)
    Kisses

  7. Amber says:

Honey, that is too funny! My Mom has been practicing that with me but it is nice to see the step-by-step procedure your human uses. My Mom has been on the right track but we still need more practice. She says my massive nails hurt her legs too when we do it but she is willing to get a few scratches. :) So far I have not been able to do it unless my Mom is in front of me and I don't do it standing up either. I will keep working on it though. :) Thanks for the tutorial! You are brilliant!

That's a great video. Very clear instructions and demonstrations.
I had taught Lilly to march a couple months ago and she learned quickly. It was one of those things that started out by accident and turned in to a cool "trick". I'll have to make a video.
You're much more creative than we are, adding all the variations. We'll try that!

  9. Khyra says:

    Furry khool!

My mom is smiling though -- I"m not sure why ;-)

  14. Hi Honey,
Thank you for showing us how to learn to march with a human. As we are very good at shaking paws and hands, we might be able to learn this as well. We will show you how we do it, once we've learned it!

  15. Kathie R says:

    Hey Honey,

Awesome video! That will really be helpful to Mom as she tries to teach me to 'march.' We tried out your first steps (holding the hands flat instead of like a fist with the treat in it) at the club today. That went well, so next time Mom might try putting her hands on her legs and lifting her legs.

Thanks so much! You guys are so helpful : ) We'll post a video when we make some more progress!

    Cheers!

    Jackson

  16. Holly says:

Great instructional video!!! I learn so much better by watching something instead of just reading about it. Maybe someday we will try that when we are done with all the things we're learning now :) I love training Behr tricks, altho I don't have much time to work on it.

    Holly (Behr's mom)

  17. Teddy says:

That's a great training video!! Honey, you're a superstar in my book ;)

Wow, your mom has a lot of patience though I'm sure you picked up the trick quickly.

I learned shake in puppy school, but we don't practice it so much, so I forgot. Maybe we'll have to try it again.

    Teddy

  18. Mango says:

Hee hee! I already sneak peeked at that movie on YouTube. I made momma watch it so that she will help me learn my kicks properly.

Do you weave? I am trying to learn weave poles, but it is hard and sometimes I knock them down (OK, well, I almost always knock them down).

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  19. Mango says:

Honey! We practiced kicking today like you showed us in the movie. We did the version with momma putting her hands on her legs and lifting them up and I did great! I will be as good as you soon.

Glad you liked my smaller self. I was a bit graceless I am afraid.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

P.S. Labragal, hmmm… that is what Dexter calls girl labradors that he likes.

  20. Happy says:

You're so clever, Honey! I don't think I can do that.

Pee ess: Have an award for you :-)

  21. Chef says:

Thank you for the lesson, Honeygirl! I already "shake" my paw but now we're going to try alternate paw shakes. If that works out, we going right through to marching! Then I'm going to be a dancer just like you. Mama's rolling her eyes. Don't know why.,,

We'll keep you posted on my progress.

And Happy Mother's Day to Hsin-Yi!

    xoxo
    Chef

  22. JD and Max says:

Hi Honey -- us again! We just wanted to say that we've started a little blog game just for fun -- it's in honour of doggies that we greatly admire. Please pop over and see what it's all about as our very first game links into you! Tail wags -- JD and Max.

  23. Niamh says:

Love your marching Honey, it is a great trick! Your mom is an excellent teacher.

    Your friend,
    Niamh

  24. Wow Honey…you sure are a smart dog and your girl human is such a good dancing partner! I'm sorry you lost your little kitty sister, I would be honored to have you as my friend. As you see by this post of mine, for some reason I LOVE big dogs:) http://brucethecat.blogspot.com/2009/04/kindred-s

I know that there is a whole world of dog dancing out there and it looks wonderful!! http://www.worldcaninefreestyle.org/index.html?ht

  25. pointerpandemonium says:

That is very cool Honey!! We all know "shake a paw" and Hazel already knows each paws (and can shake using both paws…clever clogs) so mummy will have a go at this with her.

We'll let you know how we get on.

Thanks to Hsin-Yi for making that video. We'll be back to look again before training!!

    Love Scotty xx

  26. What a grrreat step-by-step video! We will have to start practicing!

  27. Amber-Mae says:

Only Chloe can do this doggy dressage. I can't. I have difficulty lifting my front legs for some reason.

  28. Sasha says:

    Hi Honey

That's a great idea -- my human thinks we will be able to learn that one quite easily -- we're going to start right now!

    Puppy kisses
    Sasha

  29. Sasha says:

    Hi Honey

We've just spent a few minutes learning "left" and "right", and my human learned it really quickly! We just need to practice it for a while to make sure we both remember it. Then I stole the clicker.

My human laughed, because she wants to teach me to bow, and I was in the right position, but she couldn't click me because I was chewing on the clicker at the time!

    Puppy kisses
    Sasha
