Playdate with Cookie & Cinnamon – and Tips for Safe Doggie Meetings

Last weekend was very special and exciting because I got to meet my blog friends, Cookie & Cinnamon the Beagles, in person!!

Honey+Cookie+Cinnamon

In fact, we actually used to live quite close to each other – when Cookie was still an “only dog” - we used to pass each other sometimes when out walking in the streets or in the park. But Cookie always seemed very scared of me and I was also very young so I was sometimes naughty – so my human did not want to make him stressy and we always made sure that we did not go too near them. So we never got a chance to become friends! :(

Then the great thing was we found each other through our blogs and then our humans started getting very friendly with each other. They even went off and had fun without us in a special exercise class  called Hoopla! where they spin big hoops around their bodies! (Humans are so weird…)

So we decided it was high time that us dogs got together! So last weekend, we arranged to meet up at Shore Road Reserve, an off-leash dog park near where we both live…

Cinnamon was not nervous at all – she came right up to me and immediately invited me to a game of tag!

She was a real flirt, in fact – she wanted all the dogs there to chase her! :)

Hsin-Yi told me to “restrain” myself so that I wouldn’t scare Cinnamon the first time I met her – she might find my usual bouncing and rough wrestling too overwhelming! So I tried very hard to be good and not too rough…although it was really difficult! Cinnamon was a very good tease and it was so exciting to chase her!!

HY+Honey+Manako+beagles6

The good news was Cookie didn’t seem so scared of me anymore – although he didn’t join in our chasing game, we did have a nice walk altogether afterwards and he was quite happy to trot along next to me.

We also all posed very nicely together for photos! :) Don’t we look adorable?

Honey+Cookie+Cinnamon2

Cookie & Cinnamon very quickly worked out that Hsin-Yi had yummy sausage treats in her pockets and they instantly started trying to earn them, doing Sits and Downs…gosh, I’d never seen such obsessive attention in a dog – it made me tired just watching them and I had to lie down for  rest!

(guys, guys...relax!)

HY+Honey+Manako+beagles3

(are they always like this??)

Hsin-Yi said it was amazing because she is used to dopey me who needs 5 minutes to think about everything before I do it…she has never worked with dogs that responded so fast and with such obsessive attention  before!

Paul started telling her to imagine all the tricks and activities she could do with a dog that had so much more drive and energy than me (because he thinks Beagles are really cute and might like one after me…) but Hsin-Yi decided that she still likes having a mellow dog, even though I am much harder to motivate! (hey! not fair! I do get excited and animated sometimes…for all of 15 seconds!! Hee! Hee!) :)

(see? They're still obsessed with the treats...)

(see? They're still obsessed with the treats...)

Well, we all had a wonderful time and my humans are so pleased because now we can meet up regularly for playdates and training!

Here is a cute little video Hsin-Yi made of our meeting…her favourite part is at the end where you see our 3 bums walking off together, with tails wagging… :)

Tips for Safe Doggie Meetings:

It’s always a good idea for us doggies to meet each other for the first time off-leash and in a ‘neutral territory’, because then we feel more relaxed and we can decide how much personal space we need to feel comfortable. We are also free to behave naturally and go through the normal canine greetings – eg. approaching each other in a curve or from the side, not head on, like when we meet in the street.

If we don’t feel like playing together or being near each other, it’s best not to try and force us to be friends…sometimes, we need a bit of time to warm up to each other! :) And if one of us is a bit boisterous, then it would be good if our humans controlled us a bit so that we don’t overwhelm the other, shyer dog.

dogs-meeting-onleashHumans often like to stop when out walking and try to get strange dogs to “say hello” to each other.  This might be OK for some dogs, especially young, playful ones, but a lot of us grown-up dogs find this very rude – and so we might get grumpy! :(   Us dogs always feel more vulnerable and defensive when we are restrained on a leash and especially if the leashes are held tight or get tangled up as we circle each other! Also, if our humans are nervous, all their stressy vibes pass down the leash to us and make us feel stressy too.

The other problem with doggies who are allowed to “say hello” to every dog they meet is that they soon start getting over-excited when they see another dog and start jumping or barking or lunging, trying to drag their humans over to them…even if the other dog doesn’t want to say hello!

Canine education

This is a very common mistake humans with new puppies make – they worry about ‘socialisation’ so they let their puppies stop to meet every dog on the walk – when they should really be teaching their puppy to walk politely past other doggies in the street and only socialise when they say it’s OK, like at the dog park or in training class.

Another reason it is a bad idea to let us go up to every doggie we meet on walks is that the other doggie might have some “issues” and if they feel threatened enough, they may attack us. Then we would have a bad experience which may leave some damage on our minds and change the way we behave…we may even start to get suspicious of other doggies in the future and become fear aggressive ourselves! There are many doggies dog-lunge-attackwhose friendly temperaments were ruined after they had a bad experience… so even if you are really friendly, your human shouldn’t just let you bounce up to every dog you meet because the other doggie may not be as friendly.

Not all doggies are sociable – some may have been abused and are very scared; others may be sick and old and want to be left alone…so it is important to respect that. It is much better if your humans choose a few stable dogs that they know are friendly, for you to meet – than to risk letting you have a bad experience. Quality over quantity! :)

My humans made this mistake with me when I was a puppy and that is one reason why I became so naughty and out-of-control. But now I have learnt to walk past other dogs politely when I’m on leash and I am almost never allowed to socialise with strange dogs when I’m on the lead. Sometimes, if we’ve been passing each other a lot and seem friendly to each other, then my humans might let us have a sniff…but generally, they only let me meet new dogs when we’re in an off-leash place. That way, there is a greater chance of everyone remaining safe and happy – and us doggies becoming good friends!

  • Looks like Honey, Cinnamon and Cookie had a great time! I love your write up about doggy introductions too, some excellent advice there.

  • Oh my goodness!!! You three are ADORABLE together! That is so great that you got to meet a blog friend in person! Even if you did technically know each other before, it’s still very cool!

  • Hi Honey,

We love this post!! We must keep a copy of it permanently!

Yes, it was a fantastic meet-up! If there were not for your considerate humans, it might’ve ended up a sad meet-up where we didn’t get along as well as we did. Our mum was actually overwhelmed by the success, because she remembered how Cookie had behaved previously when he met Honey.

Mum says it was embarrassing that we jumped up and put our paws on your human’s laps. But, we don’t understand why she doesn’t like it. We think that is the best way to show how happy we are!

We hope to catch up with you soon!!

    P.S.
We love the photo of a man being pulled by a white little dog and looking like flying!!

  • Wow! You are one HANDSOME dog And HUGE!

(Dr. Liz here: great post, BTW – thanks!)

  • Honey! I am so glad you got along with those little beagles because they seem like very nice doggies. Also thanks for the introduction tips. Off leash is much better!

Momma thought having a “smart” dog like stupid Pee-Wee would make training easier. It does for stuff like agilities, but not for tricks because he doesn’t stop and think and always wiggles around so much it is hard to capture and shape a move.

  • That was such a wonderful playdate and thanks for all the tips on meeting dogs. It was so helpful and informative. The video was a lot of fun to watch, even our Dad watched it.

  • Oh Honey,
I love the way you walk, looks just like you’re dancing to the music.
All of you having fun in the park, I wish I could join you, imagine you chasing me around and around. I would look like a cute rabbit and you the powerful tiger, hehe!

  • How fun that you got to meet those cute beagles! That is funny how into the treats they were! My pal Ozzie is like that in ways. When we finish our off-leash walks and his Mom calls him to get his leash on he goes to her lets her put it on then looks to my Mom for a treat….very funny. :)

  • Honey, what a nice day and such nice friends you have there! The beagles are just gorgeous, I’ve never been to their blog, but I will! I loved the video and, once again, your tips are just abolsutely great. It’s so nice and easy to read you, usually the texts about training dogs are so dull or so technical… You should writte a book! Plus, cesar Milan really gets on my nerves with all those pack leader theories (BOL) and your advices are much more practical and to be used everyday. Please, keep posting.

I’m going to put a new link to you in my sidebar. You should get a nice blog button (do we call it that way? me and my groovy english)!

    Love

    Pipa

  • Hi Honey
Can you please tel Hsin-Yi that my Mummy said thank you furry much fur your comment after my Cesar Milan post. She is using training time as part of our exercise now. I am still not keen to give up my position of power here but Tahlia is doing furry well and so is Scooby.

Great advice with meeting new doggies. I have to work more one-on-one with Waldo. He is dragging me around all the time to sniff, and it hurts my arm sometimes! We practiced a bit yesterday, but we’ll have to keep working on it.

  • Hi Honey, this is Star! I am still learning not to get excited about every single dog I see. But I am doing a lot better about focusing in class and about being polite and calm at the dog park. The Lady thinks your tips are right on.

    Your friend, Star

  • Hi Honey
We just loved your post today! What great pictures and fantastic video. You and the beagles looked great!
We loved watching you running about – they were very beautiful beagles too – we have not seen their blog.
We have been planning to meet up with the Dughallmor beagles at some point – we like your tips about neutral territory because you are never sure how we will get on!
We both like to meet other dogs although Bailey is not always keen on other female dogs for some reason.
She must make an exception for Martha!
Martha can be nervous and may not like meeting four dogs at once.
Your post made us think about it especially the scary pictures where it hasnt worked out!
We just think you and the beagles made for the cutest pics!!!
    love

  • Oh wow! We have been trying to catch up but it’s just not happening, hectic weekend! But of course we had to come and see you meeting Cookie and Cinnamon….and what fun you had! (Yes, us Beagles are master teases and will do ANYTHING for treats, especially sausages!) You all got along and behaved so well together, which of course is mainly down to your humans knowing how to do a meet and being sensible :D We haven’t been able to play with our Dane friend Annie for a long time because she has just become a mum!
    Slobbers xx

Honey, Rosie here…..Mum says I MUST be preggers otherwise why would I be eating pickles with raspberry ice-cream? There’s no other explanation, hehe!
Seriously though, my Mum says that I was mated at just the right time, she did a pregnancy test which came back positive and I have all the symptoms (and I really do mean ALL, even the ummm….odour…eww) I have never suffered with phantom pregnancies (unlike Gabbi who really does!) My tummy is getting really big and so are my boobs…..and i’m very heavy too (I normally weigh about the same as a feather!) Of course there is still a very slim chance that something could go wrong….I hope not, but it does happen sometimes….but all being well I should whelp in around 3 weeks time, i’m so excited!
    Wish me luck…. xx

  • Wau… I have also had possibility play with great dane girl. Her name was Iines. I actually scared first you big guys. But I have to admit it is SO GREAT to run your tail on “play mode” and speed around lawn.
