Yay! I can swim!!!!

Honey-swimming

OK, so I’m – ahem – not exactly a water dog. In fact, most of us Danes aren’t that keen on the wet stuff (other than my blog friend, Waldo  - God knows what his humans are feeding him! :) )

I know some doggies really love the water – some, like my blog friends, Paco & Milo, even dive underwater!!!!!!!

But I – like most Danes – would rather cut off my paws than get them wet…my humans always laugh when we go for a walk and I hop around over puddles to avoid stepping in them. If it’s raining, they have to DRAG me out for my daily walk :) …and if I’m naughty, all they have to do is show me the watergun and I promise to be good forever!!

But we live in a beautiful harbour city, surrounded by beaches, and my humans are always seeing other dogs running and diving into the sea. So they’re always trying to turn me into a ‘water baby’ too…

Well, after 5 yrs of heavy persuasion…I finally stopped being a ‘big baby’ and took the plunge! :) And it wasn’t that bad! Swimming Olympics here I come!

(please excuse my human’s squeaking on the video – she gets like that when she is very excited – it’s really embarrassing; can’t take her anywhere…)

  • I can’t believe you are swimming! So cool! I would be swimming too if I lived there! I don’t think Boerboels are keen on swimming, but she might have to learn in Arizona’s heat.

  • Hooray for Honey!! Bess can totally sympathize! She only liked to wade in up to her chest and that’s as far as she goes. Heffner on the other hand definitely likes to swim. Especially when it’s hot! I love the video!!

  • Oh WOW! That’s amazing Honey – you’re so brave! JD’s swum once, Max has only paddled! We’re very impressed. So let’s see, yo’ve got the looks (we all know that!), the intelligence (well – you’ve trained your humans so beautifully!) and now we find out you’re sporty too – woo-hoo, you’ve got the lot girl, we’re smitten! Tail wags – JD and Max.

  • Honey! I think you could do the next pawlympics! Maybe I could learn to swim too and we could grab Waldo and do a synchronized swimming routine.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

P.S. My ears still hurt from those squeaking sounds

  • Great to see you swimming Honey, how brave! Maybe Jana will get there too, she’s another who won’t go further than a paddle. And vizslas are supposed to love water!

  • Yaaaayyy for Honey! Congratulations and well done :D How cool that you learned to swim (something Gabbi will NEVER do!) We loved the video, it was so much fun….and don’t worry Hsin-Yi, our Mum was squealing at the end too…that was exciting! The captions were hilarious too.
    Proud of you girlie!
    Slobbers xx

  • Oh Honey, what a brave girl you are to go swimming, we dont get our feet wet, we don’t like the water at all, which is strange really as our breeder teaches us to swim in her heated pool :0)
I bet it was colddddddd in the water though??

  • WAY TO GO HONEY…YOU’RE AWESOME!!
    your pal,
    Bruce the cat:)

  • Oh Honey, that was just awesome! I only like to go in as deep as my chest (and as long as I can touch the bottom.) Mommy got me a silly orange lifejacket and it has a handle on the back so she can lift me over the breaking waves and then I’ll swim around a bit, but always back to shore. Here’s my tip — the next time they throw the ball too far out, just wait a bit, and the waves will bring it back in to a more humane depth for retrieval!

We loved your biography post, just didn’t have time to comment.

    Your pal,

    Petey

  • Woohoo Honey!!
I has not swum properly yet, if my feet stop touching the bottom I does not like it.

  • Alright Honey!! Way to go!! That’s awesome! I loved the video. You were such a cute puppy. I didn’t laugh when you almost drowned, I promise . . . . ok, so maybe a little . . . you caught me! I almost fell out of my chair laughing, but please don’t be mad. I won’t laugh ever again I promise.

  • ::clap, clap, clap:: Honey, you done good! It was fun to watch you in the water. Especially the part where that little wave almost knocked you over!

  • HOney, we’re soooo proud of you!!!! You look like a female (and canine) Michael Phelps!!! :)

Carla says thank you sooo much to Hsin-Yi, for her special advices… Carla says I’m goint through a really hard fase… but I’ll get over it (at least she thinks so).

    Your blog looks great, Honey!

    Love

  • oh wow–omg! what a great video–i was giggling the entire time. this gives me hope! Guinness will never do it–but saige is close. she thinks she is swimming but she is just walking on the bottom on her back feet and paddling with her front –sometimes paddling completely OUT of the water with her front paws %-(

hahaha!! fantastic–i am going to try harder now to get them to take the plunge–that was a fantastic video Honey! you were the sweetest of sweet puppies too!

  • Oh Honey!!! You did such a great job!!!!! Way to overcome you fears!!!

  • Yay, Honey! I wish Winnie would swim like Honey, but she’s a scaredy dog when it comes to seeper water, LOL.

    Love the video!

  • That’s excellent, Honey! Once you’ve learned how to swim, there is nothing to be scared of at the beach!! Congratulations!!!

  • Congratulations, Honey, that was so incredible. Mom is always babbling about how she wishes we lived near the ocean so we could all go swimming. We hate to tell her but we don’t think we would like it, except maybe Thunder Dunder.

    Loved this video – awesome.

  • Way to go Honey!!! I am most impressed. I have to bark at the ball for a bit before I take the plunge. Yay

  • Hi Honey,

Thank you for your advice on how to deal with Cinnamon’s excessive barking. You are really knowledgeable!! Actually yesterday at her agility class I realized that she is sensitive to any change of the environment. Yesterday she started barking at a car when its red tail lights turned on in the dark, and she couldn’t concentrate on training for a while.

Yes, I’ve heard that teaching a dog to bark on command is an effective way to control a dog’s excessive barking. I have actually tried to teach Cinnamon to do so but it has been unsuccessful. I will have a look at Dr Ian Dunbar’s website which your human recommended to me.

Thank you for all your support!!

  • Way to go Honey!

That was so pawesome to see your transition through the years!

Tank woo fur sharing your skills!

I would love to see woo and Mango put together a synkhronised routine!

PeeEssWoo: Tank woo fur the tails up on the parcel!

  • Yay Honey! I love to swim. I am so glad that you have learned. You look great. Now I just have to get Ambrose to like swimming.

    Your friend,
    Niamh

  • OMD that was hilarious at the end! She looked like she was proud of herself too! here is yet another example of why my moose might have a dash-o-dane. He loves the water like a good lab but he sticks to sitting or standing in it though he has occasionally dunked his head on purpose. BUT he will not SWIM if he can avoid it at all. I have seen him do it so know he can, he just likes to have his feet on the ground. If he took off swimming like Honey did I would be squealing too!

  • WOW!!! Way to go Honey! That was so exciting! My Mom would act the same way and after seeing this video she has hope that one day I too shall swim but I have other plans. ;)

    Kisses,
    Nala

  • Love the swimming video! I was really excited when Roxy first swam too. She took to it quite quickly. Lilly is like Honey. She’s easing her way into it! She’s already three and she only goes up to her chest. At first she didn’t even want to get her feet wet. Lilly acts like a little princess!
    Good for you Honey!

  • As a schnauzer I’m supposed to like the water, but NO THANK YOU! You are very brave to swim like that!

  • I loved to watch you swimming, Honey!
    Good job!
    Kisses and hugs

  • Hi Hsin-Yi! I called it “THE sword” because it’s William Wallace’s sword that’s in the Wallace monument. (Ever seen Braveheart?)Some people say it’s too big and heavy to be his actual battle sword and is more of a dress sword but I like to think it chopped a few nasty fellows up!
As for sending today’s photo to a card company….I wouldn’t know where to start….maybe you could email me some pointers if you know?

Yes, puppy fever has hit our house….only 4wks to go, can’t wait!!

    N xx

  • Congrats that is so exciting – we are also a breed who isnt suppose to swim – but we swim all the time – and go under water too – Sweetie even catches fish – MJ is only 5 months so he is still not totallt sure abut it

I even went swimming through the seaweed and came up with it draped all over me last weekend – mommy was so upset she didnt have a camera but all the people on the beach had a good laugh and called me swamp thing

  • Hi Honey
We just loved your video – we were not sure of the water either! It is bit and scary and noisy!
These humans shrief even more when they are beside the sea – have you noticed that?
We were well impressed to see you swimming – we discovered we can both swim too.
Like you we dont intend making a habit of it but well, if it keeps the humans happy, you just have to do what you have to do!
We are loving your long legs Honey…….
    love
    Martha & Bailey xxxx

  • We are really going to have to use preview – we think the sea is BIG and humans SHRIEK! Our mum needs glasses but fights against it…..

  • Honey we are so proud of you! Swimming is so much fun and great doggercise! I will try and talk mom into getting a video of us swimming so you can see us too!

  • Wow, Honey, that’s awesome! Can I join you for the Olympics? Mom hasn’t seen me swim yet (uh duh, we live on the driest place on earth) but she knows I love water and did see me invade her pool once! Oh my, that was loads of fun! But maybe I’m more of a water polo girl. You know, with WRESTLING being my thing?

Anyways, congrats on your achievements, Honey! There’s nothing to stop you no, not even an Ocean of Blue!

PS: The “CC” in CC-man stands for “Crabby Cockatiel”. His real name is Bobbie. Mom usually calls him “Lover”, but T-man Angel forbade me to ever call him that!! I call him CC-man the same way T-man Angel did ;)

  • Hi Honey,

It’s been a while since I’ve visited your blog, sorry. But, I am making my rounds now.

I love swimming too! Whoa! And, I always keep a look out for sharks and lions. Yep, lions. Oh well…

When are you going into the water again?

    Love,
    Homer

  • I have loved to swim! But seldom get to as the lakes are really rocky up here in Ontario, Canada.
    Love, Sadie!
