Tricky TV-Day and my ‘Bow’ & ‘Reverse/Back Up’ trick

trickytbuttonYay – we got the DVD from the TV people yesterday so for Tricky T-Day today, I’m able to show you my TV debut at last!

To keep things simple, I have added it to my original post: “My TV Debut!” – so I hope you don’t mind going back there to watch it. As I said, it wasn’t my finest moment on camera and I didn’t dance very well but it wasn’t too bad considering all the flashing lights and TV crew and cameras and other distractions – and most of all, the TINY space!! ;)

Now, I have been trying to do some free-shaping (or free-timing) as Ludo asked, to come up with a trick with an object but so far, I have not come up with much and broken 2 buckets in the process…so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until next week for a movie on that, while my human tries to find some object that can withstand being bashed/squashed/mauled/slobbered on without breaking…

But in the meantime, a lot of you have been asking me for more ‘tricks tutorials’ so here are 2 more:

The first one is the Reverse or Back Up trick, which is a special request from my friend, Mango the Mastiff - Mango has been asking me a long time to show how I learnt to back up. This is a really useful move for dancing (as well as getting out of tight spaces when you’re a big, long dog like me!)

Teaching a dog to Reverse/Back Up:

And here is how I learnt to ‘take a bow’ – I don’t do this trick very well: I’m a bit lazy about going down low enough and Hsin-Yi hasn’t really pushed me on it because she is not sure if it’s too difficult for a big dog like me. But most smaller dogs do it no problem and it’s a pretty cool trick to learn!

These are just some ways of teaching these tricks – every doggie is different and may do better with a different way…so if you have any other ways of learning them, please do share them!

And if you do try out these tricks – or you can do them already – please do post a video on your blog to show us!  I have been so impressed with several of my blog friends who have been learning tricks using some of my ‘tutorials’:

Here is Pu the Golden Retriever doing:

Here is Rufus & Indie:

Here is Mango the Mastiff showing his

And I know Chef the Boxer is also learning Marching Paws but he also hasn’t posted a video yet. Come on, doggies – don’t be shy! ;)

WELL DONE to all of you!! :)

I know there might be others of you doing these tricks too – if I have missed mentioning you, please forgive me! Do let me know as I would love to tell everyone how great you’re doing!

oh no Honey your human is wrong--you actually did a fantastic job on TV debut--your mom is definately a perfectionist if she is disappointed! it seemed more like a demonstration than a full out dance routine, and i think most people got that--you demonstrated your abilities VERY WELL!!!! GOOD GIRL!!!

  2. What great training videos -- we really gotta get mommy to start videoing us!!

honey girl you are so cute and patient with mommy

tell your mommy she needs a iPhone cause our mommy had a clicker app she uses for us it flashes when it clicks -- it works really well for us deafies

  3. Mango says:

    Honey,
I think the bow is too hard for full sized doggies such as ourselves. Sorry about your bucket. I tend to kind of smash things with my big old paws too. Momma says if it doesn't rain that we will start working on backing up tonight! I am thinking hard about it.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  4. Ricky says:

    Great tutorials and tricks!

  5. Oh Honey -- your TV debut was great! I can't believe they gave you such a small space to dance in. That must have been tough to strut your stuff when it was in such tight quarters.

You are a STAR! I thought you and your mom did superb!

Misty is learning your go under the leg trick, and Oreo is working on your bow.

Too bad your mom doesn't think "breaking buckets" is a trick. Seems like you are pretty good at it :)

  6. We enjoyed your TV debut. It wouldn't play in your post but we went to YouTube and watched it.

And the backing up video was interesting.

  7. So many videos to look at! We will have to check them out at home…where the computer runs better. We'll be back later!

  8. Irene says:

    Hi Honey

We love your new videos and we'd like to thank you for the very useful tips! We are absolutely going to practice these tricks!

You and your human did really great on your TV debut and you both can be very proud!

    Hugs, Coco and Irene

    Hi Honey!
You are just so clever!! I totally have to get in on this -- I learned a lot of tricks when I was a puppy. My mom is really eager to teach me more new things. I have never done clicker training; I wonder if it is easy to make the switch?
    xo

  10. Ludo says:

Well done HONEY! I for one think you did just FANTASTIC in your tv appearance, I know how very distracting that must have beed for you and you did great. It was good for us to hear how to say Hsin-Yi's name properly too!
    ~lickies, Ludo

  11. Dana says:

Very helpful videos! I need to get working with my Moose! He does a bow before every meal (ok he is stretching but it looks the same. I wonder if I could capture that to get a little head start. Like you said theough for big doggies I think it is hard and with his joint issues I don't want to over do it. I use the command 'Back' with mild success (given that I have not actually purposefully trained it) when I am coming in the door or when he has followed me somewhere he should not have. It is very useful so I am going to try to formally teach it with your tips!
    thanks!

  12. Thor says:

    Hi Honey,

You were so great on TV! Mumma and I have been doing really well thanks to all your (and Hsin-Yi's) clicker training tips! I have started using a targeting wand.

    Anyway…
It was my birthday yesterday and to celebrate I got My own Blog!
Come and visit me sometime :D

    your fan,
    Mr Darcy

  16. mrd23 says:

  18. We think you did a great job on TV Honey!!!!! And you to Hsin Yi!

  19. Sara Alves says:

    Hi Honey and Hsin Yi!
I’m fine!!! Haven’t been around because Sara went to Italy for a verrryyyy looong weekend… :(
I stayed home with my other human, Ricardo.
    So I haven’t been training that much…
but now that Sara´s back! we started immediately! she really missed training with me :D

We saw the video yesterday night, and started to do the bow right away :) Sara thought I would pick it up fast! and she was right! 3 minutes of training, and voilá! I can say thank you to all my furry friends! (I´ll make a post about it on the weekend).

We looove your videos honey! you explain everything so well…. that almost seems easy eheheh

But we are having some trouble on associating the trick to a voice command! you see, Sara always taught me tricks associating it to a gesture (like Hsin Yi did with the bow), and is much easier for me to understand….

Any ideas on how I could improve this area? or should I just keep insisting and hearing the voice command?

Big licks and kisses to you!
    Sara and Pu

  20. Hi Honey! Long time no woofs :D
It was lovely of you to travel so far to come to Rosie & Petey's wedding…..and you looked stunning in your Westwood legs that went on forever!
Your tricks are cool as always but we can't see all your pics (or vids?)

In answer to your question…..Cullen Skink is a thick creamy broth made with "Yellow Fish"….usually smoked haddock….and it's totally delicious.
Not sure what breed the red faced dude is (I was hoping someone in the comments would know!) but I think it's some sort of duck…..wouldn't be a mandarin would it?
And yes, Snoop looks like his neck is broken but he's a very squishy dog and always sleeps in strange positions!

    Slobbers xx

  21. Yep, think you could be right…..aren't they ugly? Ducklings are cute though!

  23. Hi Honey! Thank you for your videos and lessons! Thanks to you we have more fun!
It's a pleasure to be your friend!!!
Next we will try to "reverse"! Try!

    Kisses
    Rufus and Indie

  24. Brownie says:

OMG! I know your mommy is a perfectionist, but I LOVED watching your TV video! That space was minuscule, I don't know how you did it!

My momster also loved your tutorials, and she'll try her hardest to emulate you. She even tried to emulate your super cute accent (and let me tell you… I hope the training goes better!)

    Thanks!

  25. Jasmine says:

Hey, nice videos once again. Thanks for making them for all of us. I'm going to check out your TV debut next.

Also, a message from Jasmine. She tagged you in a fun picture challenge, so head on over to her blog to check out the details.

  26. Jackal says:

Oh I forgot! You asked for other methods for teaching these. I taught Jackal to bow by luring him under a chair. For smaller dogs you can use your leg bent at the knee. Maybe when I get the chance I will make a video to show everyone. It worked really well for him, because he wouldn't do it using the method you showed. He was too quick to go in a down, although after watching your video I realized I wasn't clicked slight elbow bends, so that was probably all my fault.

Also I noticed in your back video that Honey was trying to swing to your left side! I loved seeing that! I can't wait until Jackal is doing it unprompted.

  27. PR Gang says:

Excellent videos as usual Honey! You're such a talented girl and your Mum is awfully clever. Thanks for the inspiration. We will have to film ourselves too.

  28. Honey, you are so clever! My mom has promised me that as soon as the puppies are all grown and can do without me (puh what a fulltime job it is to be a mother!!!), we're off for adventures! She didn't mention any tricks but she knows I can't wait to take one of the horses on a leadrope. I'll be so big when she comes up!

    Warm greetings from Africa,
    Sheba

  29. Hi Honey, thanks for sharing those great videos! At the moment we are learning to bow with a verbal cue next :-)

  30. MrsDesperate says:

I will be so happy to share my video on your blog.

  34. Wild Dingo says:

these are great! I tought Juno to bow using a chair with rungs and held the treat underneath. I taught Loki's bow using serendiptiy. he knew his marker word (yes, not a click) and when he got up to stretch one morning i gave him his word and a jackpot of treats. he then went around and offered me his downward facing dog all day long… hilarious. but sometimes NOW he gets sloppy and will just quickly pat his two front feet and bend elbows slightly because he's over zealous. i think i need to be better at shaping his behavior and not rewarding for sloppy…

i need to teach backing up. i like how you teach back up while backing away. in my training we taught that backing away will teach your dog to come so that would be something funky for him.

these vids are way cool! thanks!
    wild dingo
