‘Human Zoomies’

Well, for their last Tricky T-Day my blog friend, Oreo the Sheltie, posted this really cool video of him teaching himself to jump through a hoop, just by free-shaping for about 2 minutes! How cool is that?! If you haven’t seen it yet, you gotta go over and check it out: Tricky T-Day Hoop-It-Up

So I thought I’d get my human to do that with me too – a nice, calm free-shaping video to show for my Tricky T-Day this week…

Well, except my human went a bit nuts – I don’t know if it was something she fed herself or what – I suspect it’s that box in the corner of our living room which that special noise called “music” comes out of.

I’ve noticed that whenever the box starts spitting out music, my human starts acting all weird and crazy…Whoa!

I tried to calm her down by getting her to focus on a tug toy but you know, once she’s in the ‘red zone’, she’s gone…(sigh). It’s one of those things I’m still working on with her.  I guess even humans get zoomies sometimes…

Do yours get like this? Any training trips? I know humans are generally very trainable and mine is actually quite well-behaved and predictable most of the time. It’s just when she hears that music box and she gets so excited, I can’t control her at all.

Maybe I can clicker train her with a camera machine - I’ve noticed that she’s really focused on the camera machine and will hold really still, waiting for the click from the shutter. And she’s very photo-motivated, so I could reward her fairly easily… Or do you think they make head halters for humans? ;)

I know some of you have trained your humans really well and can rely on them always being calm and not embarrass you…perhaps you could share your tips with me? :) Or do you think mine is a lost cause?

I absolutely love this! You and Honey have such a wonderful relationship! Lucky girls!

  2. Oh Honey, you are so patient. You dogs do have to put up with a lot from us crazy humans! You put forth your best effort in trying to calm your mom down, but I think it is hopeless :)

    Nice “hooping it up”!

  3. Storm says:

This does looks suspiciously like the zoomies. Are you sure it isn’t the stinky brown goop they drink in the morning that’s causing this? I think when humans have the zoomies to this special noise called music that they are actually dancing. And I think she may have tricked you into dancing for your tug toy! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you move that fast. :)

As for advice. I would just eat the box that makes the special noise called music. Then she wouldn’t be able to have dancing zoomies! Good luck!

  4. Tucker says:

Whoa… Your right Honey, that looks a lot like the zoomies. Your human is a little crazy. I bet your human had to take a nap after all that! I always have to take a nap after my zoomies.

  5. Hehehe…. so cute you two!

  6. Dont feel bad honey -- our human has zoomie issues just as bad if not worse than yours.

She picks Sweetie up and dances with her -- i dance with mommy just like you did with your mommy and like you i try and use a roppie toy as a prop!! but zoomies with mommy can be fun you just need to embrase it a little more

  7. janice says:

hehehe--she is a lost cause like our human--we loved your reaction at the 3 minute mark and then again at 3:30. you do not know WHAT is going on with your human huh? we like how you do your dance moves at the end

  8. Kasha the Harlequin Dane says:

Honey…your human is too funny….looks like she had fun zooming around the living room. My mom will dance once with me once a while around the house but she would no way ever let nobody see her…she’s not that coordinated. Your video did give my mom a good chuckle this morning. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

Oh and my little bitty slobber pic will be sent you Hysin-Yi shortly.

  9. Ludo says:

Yup, that the zoomies alright, i love when my Mum gets them!
At least your Mum can still do teachings when she silly, did you see this blooper real of mine that I has to put up with?

  10. Samantha says:

Hi Hsin-Yi and Honey, thanks for the comment on our blog! You and Honey really do have a wonderful relationship. Honey, good thinking bringing the tug toy to her to try and distract her. We humans can be crazy sometimes :)

    Stop by again soon!

  11. I like that first scene in the video: “If I don’t acknowledge her behavior, it will extinguish on its own.”

  12. Brownie says:

OMD Honey, are you sure your human and mine are not related? First of all, I don’t understand why my momster turns on the big black box and then tries to bark over the sound of the box. I mean… what’s the point? And besides, her barking is very horrible compared to the sound from the black box.

I have to say that your human had a supreme version of the zoomies… You have a great advantage over me in terms of size, so what I would do is (1) when she’s laying down, plop on top of her so she can’t zoom on her! (2) Lean against her and pin her to the wall… no more zoom zoom! and, if all else fails, I walk on my momster’s feet and that usually puts a stop to the zoomzooms. I know… you were hoping for more treat based methods, but sometimes, you don’t have a choice but to bring in the big muscles!

BOL! I LOVED that video! At least now I know my momster is not the only untrained human!

  13. Mango says:

Is your mom part border collie or something? Such foolishness. I can see how horrifying it was for you to see her like that. You were looking out the window and hoping it would stop.

Then that hoop thing! What the heck?

Have you tried donuts? Those work very well to refocus my momma towards more acceptable behavior.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  14. Meowm does stuff like this sometimes. And when she does, she picks us up, one at a time, and holds us while she does these zoomie/dance things. We have no idea what causes it or what to do about it. We will be staying tuned to your blog to see if any answers come up.

  15. MurphyDog says:

    Dear Honey-dog,

I know just how you feel. My mom can be a complete nut when that music box starts making noise. And SHE is the one always telling ME “no playin in the house!”

I have to say though, I sure do enjoy getting silly with her. It makes me super happy to dance and play like that. Looks like you feel the same way! You sure do have her trained well though, she knows exactly what you want when you pick up that tug! Nice job!

  16. JD and Max says:

Hi Hsin-Yi and Honey -- our human was laughing all the way through this video! You two have such great fun together -- aww, it made us feel all happy and waggy just to watch it. You ARE a good girl to have such patience with training your human you know. We know it’s all about persistance but sometimes -- we can appreciate -- it can be hard to stick at it……he he he! Schnauzer snuggles -- JD and Max.

  17. Khyra says:

    She woke woo up

and then subjekhted woo to all THAT?!?

    What was in her khoffee?

    Khyra
PeeEssWoo: Good lukhk with the training…I’ve given up on mine!

  18. Dana says:

Honey you remind me so much of my Moose! When a case of human zoomies and barking happen here at the Moose lodge he gets that same look on his face and goes and gets his tug toy to try to re-focus me. Very cute though!

  19. The OP Pack says:

Mom has been watching a lot of TV today and she said your video is the best show she has seen. It is obvious that your Mom loves you very much and that makes her so happy she just can’t contain herself. Awesome stuff!!!

    Tail wags, the OP Pack

  20. Hi Honey,

How can you stay so calm when your human is acting like that? I, Cinnamon, couldn’t stop barking if our mum was dancing and singing like that! But, to be honest, your human looks like much more fun to play with than our mum :-)

Thank you for making us smile to start a day!

  21. Paco & Milo says:

  22. Gennasus says:

Definitely a lost cause. But you wouldn’t want it any other way, life just wouldn’t be the same.

    Keep having fun together.

  23. Niamh says:

    Honey,

I am so impressed with how patient you were with your person when she had an attack of the zoomies. People can’t seem to help themselves sometimes. I was sorry to see that she sang at you. I am always embarrassed when Barbara does that to me and it makes Ambrose quite crazy. I hope you person is back to normal now.

    Your friend,
    Niamh

  24. Mr Darcy says:

    Herro dear Honey,

Wow, yet again I reminded of my puppiness. When my hooman gets the zoomies I just join in.

I realise now, that that is very irresponsible of me.

I thought you did really well. First you tried ignoring the behaviour; then you tried distraction; then you tried to join in so as to gradually re-focus her -- alas all to no avail!

At the end of the day, you have to remember that zoomies in the house is dangerous. The moment she starts acting up go and ring your bell and get her out of the house.
Then shut her out there. Hoomans don’t have a very good attention span so aim for 30 seconds to one minute of time out.
She will learn pretty quickly because she doesn’t want to be away from you, even for a little while.

    smooches,
    Mr Darcy

  25. Honey, you are The Picture of Patience. When my Mom starts acting weird (which is more often than I care to admit), I generally go hide. Crazy humans.

  28. Sara Alves says:

    Pu and Sara

  29. Pipa says:

Oh, Honey, just let your hooman have a lil’ fun too! It’s very nice to see her so happy, dancing, singing and playing with you! :) You are a very lucky girl to have a always-in-a-good-mood-hooman!

Carla bought a clicker and she went nuts! She made me touch her hand the hole afternoon! 3 minutes each time but, boy, lots of times! I think my nose hurts. Then she made me sit and lay down and she’d click all the time. It’s a new sound. It means nhamy stuff. I’m a bit hard with treats, cause I get tired of everything fast. I’m still waiting for her to buy liver! :)

So, now, she will continue on watching your videos to learn more stuff.!

    :)

    Love

    Pipa

  30. Honey, we are so envious of you! U stay in a really dog friendly country! we doubt we’d be able to walk around town like u!

hehe. good luck with the hula hoop trick…
Camry’s really scared of it, coz it dropped on her before!!

Oh, and thanks for dropping by our blog again!:)

  31. Lorenza says:

That sure is a happy video!
    I love it!
    Hsin-Yi sure looks happy!
    Kisses and hugs

  32. MrsDesperate says:

Oh Honey, I loved you in this video. You’re like: ‘What the?” when your human gets the zoomies, but good-naturedly you decide to humour her in join in anyway. Such dedication is to be applauded. (PS we loved seeing you today, and H. loved ‘training’ you. She refused to wash her slobbered-on hand all day -- high praise indeed!

  33. Honey, we are sorry to say that we think your human may be a lost cause!
We thought you engaged her well when you jumped through the hoop for her -- she really responded to that.
You will need to focus on reward based training with her.
We like you idea of using the camera -- we also find this focuses our human.
Again you have to humour them in this!
The real plus is that it is easy to see your human loves you to bits -- this is always a good basis on which to attempt training but we fear this will still be limited.
Keep up the good work Honey.
    love

  34. Brutus says:

    Hi guys-
Saw you on the DWB website -- what a beautiful girl you are, Honey! That’s one crazy human you have there! Good luck with the clicker training :)

    Snorts-
    Brutus the Frenchie

  35. I have to say our mom is also crazy. Worst is that she usually gets these zoomies when she cleans up the house. *huh* Screeming, dancing is not all. She keeps bothering our naps.

She also likes to sing (if you can call it singing) in car. Horrible…

    Wags Lenni & Ressu

  36. Amber says:

Honey, that made my parents laugh and smile alot! Yep, my Dad even watched that one with us. :) I feel your pain as my MOm can be quite embarrassing like that too and she’s been known to dance with me and be silly too! Luckily, she hasn’t posted the videos yet….I hope this doesn’t give her any ideas! How embarrassing! Mom says that last song was great. Anyway, I don’t have any good advice for you but maybe your Mom had too many cups of coffee that morning???? Does she even drink coffee? Coffee can sometimes make humans silly! :)

    Kisses,
    Nala

  37. Honey, we did enjoy your video. You have a great human there, we can tell she just loves being with you. Our human does the dance and sing thing too sometimes with us, funny these human’s aren’t they..BOL

Thanks for sharing the video. :-)

  38. Diana says:

Ooh…Hsin-Yi, you are such a happy and energetic person and I love that video of yours. In fact, all your videos. You have trained Honey very well. How I wish I could do that with Santa and Minnie. I’m loving your blog and I’m going to include this in my blog list so that I can keep up with you!!
