(For those who don’t know, Tricky T-Day is a cool idea started by my blog friend, Ludo the Sheltie, so that those of us learning tricks can show each other what we’ve been learning by posting training videos every Tue or Thurs. It’s great for getting ideas and supporting each other! If you would like to find out more or join the Tricky T-Day team go to: http://ludwigvanpup.blogspot.com/2009/01/tricky-t-days.html )
I have been quite naughty and not done a Tricky T-Day post in a long time but here is a new trick that I have just started learning last week: to dribble a ball! You see, every time I play with my football, I always grab it with my teeth or bash it with my paws – and so I have put holes in all my footballs and they have all become flat little bags which are no fun.
So my human, Hsin-Yi, has decided to try and teach me how to “dribble” a ball – just push it with my nose, no teeth allowed!
I have only had 3 training sessions so far and I was quite confused in the beginning (why can’t I just cram the ball in my mouth like before?) but I’m not doing too badly!
It was quite useful that I had already learnt to “target” things with my nose - both Hsin-Yi’s hand and also something she points at (eg. a Post-It note) – when I hear the command “Touch”
Anyway, here is the video – sorry it’s a bit long – Hsin-Yi has already tried to cut out some of the boring repeating bits – but she thought it would be good to show everything from the beginning, so you can see how I learnt and when I was making mistakes, so people won’t think that training me is quick & easy!

Oh I love when Hsin-Yi first put the ball on the ground and you’re big paws come booming in to get the ball! We think you’re dribbling is great, you are so smart!

Oh, ps Emily says a big (and slightly embarrassed) THANKS to Hsin-yi,.She has had her laptop for 5years and never knew she had a video editing program on it, which she has now discovered thanks to Hsin-yi’s comment! What a ninny she is
Thanks for sharing your training sessions with us, Honey. We have always love to see you in training. You are one smart dog that we have always admire. Our humans admire Hsin-Yi too. She is such a patient person and so generous in sharing. Both of you are a great pair!!
OH! I’m so excited now! I wanted to teach oreo to dribble, to go along with his “dunking” trick, but didn’t even know where to begin. Thanks for giving me some clever ideas of where to start.
Honey you did great! Of course you totally have the height advantage to play basketball!
You did great! It is hard to know sometimes whether to touch with your snooter or your feet, right? Hey! you almost wiped out on that floor again. I think you need some no skid booties.
Slobbers,
Mango
Great job on your dribbling trick Honey! It’s fun to see you doing a tricky t-day video again! Mom can’t believe it’s Thursday already -- if we’re going to post a trick, we’d better get busy!
Hi Honey & Hsin-Yi,
Great training video…you are such a smart doggie Honey. We have learned so much from the two of you. Some day soon mom will have to post some of the things that I’ve learned from the two of you. We think the clicker is just an amazing training tool. Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming.
You need to get some carpet in that room so you don’t slide around Honey — also noticed your cool toy laying on the floor…wonder who gave you that?? LOL

Good job Honey! Say… Tell your human to post some instructions about sitting up like you learned at camp. You know, where you put your paws up on the chair? I can probably figure it out but would love to know how you learned!
Yay, way to go, Honey!
Actually, that trick is one of the things my Mum wants to teach me. As you know I can walk with my front paws on a ball, but I can’t dribble a ball yet. Thanks for sharing the video!!
Love,
Cinnamon

that was awesome! i also like how you ended sessions before too much frustration. tho frustration builds drive and leads to learning, too much shuts them down. you also ended on a positive or on a correct behavior!
i also have that same “surprise” of them getting the behavior when training. one day i’m CERTAIN he doesn’t understand what i’m trying to train, and the next time we do it, boom, he does it. the digestion part is a huge part of it. when i was teaching “stand” from either sit or down, Loki almost ALWAYS sat before standing from a down. i ended session (with a few other tricks) and the next time we were out, he did stand from sit or down correctly! what’s even better is he’s generalizing more too… from a distance i could sit or down him, but when i tried to stand him, he’d almost always walk a few steps. now for some reason, he’s just not doing that.
i don’t use a clicker but i use “yes” as a mark. wish i was a better clicker trainer. clickers are faster than words. and dogs seem to like them. sometimes i say “yes!” while not in training session and they look at me like “where’s my treat?” LOL!
oh, what are you going to do with the dribble trick? and finally, how does your final trick look w/o reward? i have not been able to phase out rewards too much between behaviors.
just today, we went back to directional jumping and tho we’ve been doing it w/o reward until the end of the trick, he’s sort of losing drive (and looking around and distracted), so i started rewarding at the target (before the jump) and his drive came right back. do you know if a dog loses drive like this for a trick you think he knows or has done with enthusiasm before that it needs more repitition with rewards in order for him to feel good about that trick w/o food reward? he used to RUN to his pole, now he just walks slowly, until i started rewarding it again. it’s an odd delima. then again, i’m really working Sooooooo many behaviors right now. retreives, directional jumping, focused heeling…. working toward our BH in schutzhund so it could be just too much training. (just like athletes who over-train!)
That was fantastic!!!! I loved seeing the whole process! I had started to teach this to Jackal because I don’t want teeth marks in his soccer ball (football), but I had no idea how to teach it! Now I do. Thanks!
hello honey its dennis the vizsla dog hay nice dribbling!!! not kwite bending it like beckham yet but gitting their!!! ok bye
Honey, you’re super!!! Our mom keeps asking us to do ‘something’ but hahaha…. we won’t until she will train us the way Hsin-Yi does!
Have a great weekend!
Momo & Pinot
You are so smart Honey Dog!!!!! We love watching you!
Honey, your so lucky to have such a wonder trainer in Hsin-Yi!
You guys make the best team and you are such a smart girl!
Wow HOney! I am impressed! You are becoming quite the dribbler.
You will be a pro soon! Keep up all that great work! Mom needs to pull out her trick book and teach me a new one..we haven’t learned any new tricks in a while plus I miss going to my doggie club but Mom says they never have the meetings on “good days” so we have been missing.
Anyway, maybe she can start teaching me a new trick at home soon!
Kisses,
Nala
Hsin-Yi,
Amber here, thanks for your comments on my other blog. I told the Dane owners who live beside us not to worry too much about her weight as she will most likely catch up as she grows so that sounds pretty similar to what you said. It sounds like she is doing better now but at first everything she ate was coming out very liquidy…they finally switched foods and things have firmed up.
So interesting! Keep going, Honey!
Hi Honey, Hsin-Yi and Paul, Just checked out your blog and it looks like you have settled in well. I missed you at training last month, it was really quite. Well done on learning to dibble the ball. Slobbers George xxxx
Honey! I haven’t been able to check on you in a while. Momma says I get too many nose prints on her netbook screen. You are so smart. Momma says she is going to start clicker training me at home so I can be smart just like you. I get to start school again on April 8. (Canine Good Citizen)
Big sloppy kisses,
Juneau
