The return of Marley kitten…

Yes, you read that right – it’s Marley, not Harley – my human read his name tag wrong!

And yes, he came to visit me again! :P

Well, actually, his Human Pups brought him over to see me. You see, I was out in the front garden with Hsin-Yi doing some training when the Human Pups who live across the street came running over to give me pats & cuddles – and then they brought Marley over too!

It was VERY exciting having him there just in front of my nose and it was really hard to control myself but I remembered all my training and was a very good girl – Hsin-Yi said afterwards that she was very proud of me! :D

Here is a video showing what happened when they brought Marley over to meet me – they even put him on my head, the naughty Human Pups!

.

Hsin-Yi says: I had a bit of a shock when the kids suddenly brought Marley over at the end and started putting him on Honey’s head! I mean, I was pretty confident that Honey would be fine with the kitten – she is very respectful around cats in general – but no animal is 100% reliable! It was one thing when she was in a controlled Down Stay and he was a few feet away but another when he was actually being placed on her head!! 8-O Anyway, it all happened so fast that all I could do was just keep praising her for good behaviour and hope for the best! You’ll probably notice my constant nervous laughter in the video – ha! ha!

Anyway, it was a good test of Honey’s training and every time she copes successfully with a challenging situation, I feel that it’s more “credit in the bank” for the future. This is why I like to expose her to challenging situations as much as possible (providing I can supervise) to “bomb-proof” her as much as possible – rather than constantly try to shield her from everything – so that one day, if something does happen that I can’t control, she will hopefully tolerate it better and not react badly. Because you can’t always predict or control every situation in life and people will always do stupid things…so the best way to protect your dog, I think, is to desensitise them as much as possible.

  1. Wow, great restraint by Honey! And great control by Honey’s mom! At the end she was like, “Where are you taking my cat?”

  2. Wild Dingo says:

oh my dawg…i’ll have to watch the vid and return to comment!

  3. JD and Max says:

Hi Honey -- wow, you are so patient, we are seriously impressed! Max isn’t keen on human pups -- he just gets a bit stressed as they usually move so quickly and shout a lot! We’re trying to get him used to them -- it’s because he’s the alpha dog I think, he feels that he’s losing control and doesn’t like it JD on the other hand loves human pups, adores playing with them, but as the ‘follower’ dog he doesn’t have the stress of being top-dog! Mind you, not sure even he’d be particularly good if a cat was dumped on his head mind you!

  4. Wild Dingo says:

oh my. that little blond girl fainting from Honey’s drool was hilarious. such drama!

Honey was drooling when Marley came to say goodbye. don’t think Marley didn’t notice! LOL!

who trained Honey anyway? she’s so well-behaved! ;)

  5. Mango says:

Holy crap! I was freaking out during that whole movie! Poor Honey! She was working so hard. Her little tail was tucked and she had that look on her face. That was an amazing demonstration of all your hard work with her.

Sheesh! Those kids. They seem nice, but the way they mugged Honey and stuck their noses in her face.

Last night I was walking Dex past a house having a BBQ and about four kids saw him and CHARGED and their parents were just watching and laughing so I yelled out at the kids STOP! And they froze and then again STOP! Dexter was terrified of the attack pack. I let them come up one at a time and Dex did his best, but I was mad at the parents and they were all telling me not to yell at their kids. Oh ish!

Kids do respond well to stern commands. Hehehe.

  6. Cinnamon says:

Honey, you are amazing! How can you contain yourself and behave well in a situation like that? I wish you were still here in Auckland to teach me how to do it!

  7. sara says:

All the kids in Brisbane will want to play the Honey Slobber Game soon!

Too funny. What a patient, patient dog you were Honey, when you really wanted to get your slobber on Marely!

  8. bubba says:

    that cat looks delicious!!!!

reminds me of that great tv show Alf when Alf tries to hypnotize the cat and says; “You are no longer a cat. You are a bagel.”

  9. murphydog says:

oh Honeydog, you are so patient! Mom is quite impressed with your restraint around those kids. Don’t they know better than to stick their faces in front of a dog face? I woulda showed em and taught em a lesson…with one big SLURRRRP to the face!

  10. Honey what a good girl you are. Boxen and I grew up with kitties so we know not to chase them. Beau has decided he likes to snuggle with us and that is strange but he is warm so it is ok.

Thank you for being nice to the kitty and Hsin-Yi don’t worry so much Honey is a very good girl!

  11. Very good girl Honey! Those human pups are sweet but might need to learn some doggie manners. The oldest one was looking like she was trying to look honey in the eye from close up? Not a big deal for Honey but that could get her in trouble with other doggies. Maybe she sensed that Honey was a good girl but still! Did not look like Honey particularly like her doing that. I noticed Honey’s tail was tucked through lots of the video. Is that normal for her. She was very focused on Marley and I know Moose stops wagging when he is really focused so maybe that is why?

  12. Tucker says:

I would have tried to eat Marley. I try to eat my kistty sister Ellie sometimes.

  13. Cheryl says:

Wow, Honey good job, very impressive. I am not a fan of human pups myself but those seem pretty calm and gentle with you!

  14. The OP Pack says:

What a good girl, Honey!!! No way would we ever be able to be trusted with a kitty. One of the grandbipeds was here to watch the video and she wondered why those children were playing in the street -- Mom told her it must be a very quiet street as we didn’t see any cars go by. She says she would like to live on that street so she could ride her bike in the road.

Hope you enjoyed your walk after all that kitty excitement.

Woos -- Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara

  15. Ha roo, Honey!!! You’re like a rock star with those baby bipeds! Ammy would love being mobbed like that -- so would Dave. Storm likes more one-on-one and me? I’d just love to meet Marley!!! Wow, how cool is that!? What a credit to all the training you and Hsing-Yi have done!!! I love making friends with kitties! I’d love to have one of my own one day, but Mom says “no way” because of the ol’ Siberian Husky prey drive. :( I have to make due with friends in the neighborhood and at the vet’s.

  16. Khyra says:

Such patience from both of woo!

    Hugz&Khysses,
    Khyra

  17. Honey!!! You did such a great job….both with the human pups and the kitty! Meowm says she wouldn’t have been that patient with the human pups…..

  18. sprinkles says:

Your human did a wonderful job of training you, I am amazed at how patient you were! I don’t imagine my little dogs would be anywhere near as well behaved with that kitty!

  19. Way to go Honey. Excellent training to behave so well. Let’s just say the hu-dad does not think it would have gone quite so well here at Chez Herd.

  20. Chow Chow says:

Well done Honey! I know you will always make Hsin-Yi proud :)

  21. Amazing! The training definitely paid off. Still, you’ll never know. Best tell the kids not to do it again.

  22. Human pups try my patience too, Honey, little kitties are much more respectful. My mom always gives me extra treats after our little neighbors have been over. Just saying…

  23. Ashley says:

I like that you and Honey are splitting entries… It’s a collaborative effort! She is very well behaved.

  24. Amber says:

Wow, what a good girl you are Honey! Those kiddos sure did LOVE you…funny how they wouldn’t let you leave for your walk…I think they would have stayed and played all night. :) I got a good laugh when they were getting slobbered and trying to wipe it on the others…naughty kids. :) It was also cute how the little one waved to the camera…I think they enjoyed being filmed.

That new carpet looks very cozy…how sweet of you to give Hsin-Yi a kiss too. :)

    Kisses,
    Nala

  25. Tuffy says:

Oh my, Marley will NEVER survive us Dog Woods Pack had his human pups brought him over!

Our biped is very impress by your restraint.

  26. Heather in MN says:

Good job, sweet Honey! Kids are so in love with you that they sometimes lose their good sense. You bring out such joy and love in children! You are the best doggie!

  27. Oskar says:

Honey is a very, very good girl. Her restraint is so wonderful!

My mom person loves your accents!

  28. Sheesh this reminds me why I’m never having kids lol. Honey did such an incredible job with such great distraction and tortur . . . er attentions from the kids lol. Glad it all went so well and I’m glad Honey didn’t get claws in the face. I couldn’t tell on the video but it looked like Marley’s claws were out and I’m always paranoid when it comes to cats because cat claws always seem to cause abscesses when they puncture the skin. Anyway good girl Honey! You were great!!

  29. honey! you are so impressive! Hsin-Yi and Paul have taught you well!
As cute as it was to see you and Marley together, those kids were a bit forceful about it. eeek.

Today we walked Darwin through busy Pike Place Market, and many people and kids came up to her to pet her. One boy was rushing up to pet her, and his dad stopped him and told him he had to ask me first if it was ok. I was quite impressed with that dad. Darwin was totally fine the whole time, even when the boy gave her a hug. I was so impressed!
