(FIXED VIDEO!) Swapping humans for dancing…

I’m back in Taiwan for a few days before returning to Brisbane! Have managed to fix the video – I think the problem was that YouTube is banned in China so when when I tried to publish this post while we were there, I couldn’t insert the YouTube movie…anyway, it’s working now – so hope you enjoy it! :)   (scroll down for the movie) ~ Hsin-Yi

.

You’ve all probably been wondering why I haven’t done any posts about dancing for a while…well, actually, I did go to a dancing competition back in July but my human got busy and hasn’t had time to make up a movie for me to show you – so I’ll have to tell you about that when they get back from holiday…

But in the meantime, I thought you might enjoy watching this movie which my human made last year but I never got a chance to post because we got so busy with packing to leave NZ.

It’s of my last dance class back in Auckland.

You know I used to meet up with my dancing friends every Thursday night at the NZ Kennel Club Exhibition Centre out at Ardmore, South Auckland.

It’s a great place ‘coz it’s HUGE and it’s indoors, with soft rubber floors, so we can stay dry and comfy for our practices, even if it’s raining (which it does a lot in Auckland! ;) )

.

This last class was also a sort of farewell party for me & Hsin-Yi. Everyone had brought lots of yummies to share together…

.

…and then us doggies decided to swap and try out each other’s humans for dancing! :P

.

Baxter & his human, Grace

Well, in the end, us doggies all agreed that even though our own humans can be a pain sometimes…they’re still not bad after all!

It’s much harder dancing with humans that are not your own…I guess that’s why they call it “teamwork”! :D

Honey & her human, Hsin-Yi

* Hsin-Yi says: It was a really interesting experience trying to work with another dog.

You realise that no matter how much you complain about your own dog, they understand and know you really well – and the way you move, the commands and hand signals you give…you’re a team! :)

Monty & his human, Suzanne

Being able to read your partner well and work together smoothly as a team is SO important in dancing –

- it is what makes it look good –

- so it was really interesting (and funny!) watching those of us used to big dogs struggling to stoop down and work with tiny little ones…

…or those of us with slow dogs who can barely be motivated to move suddenly faced with a whirling tornado who is doing tricks all by himself!

Brody and his human, Kelly

It’s funny - I’ve often been so frustrated with how hard it is to motivate Honey and what a struggle it is to get her moving quickly…

I always used to think – ” oh, if only! ” – I had a faster dog or a dog with more focus and drive, it would solve all my problems…

…but when I was suddenly given the opportunity to work with these amazing dogs, I found that I actually didn’t enjoy it as much!

;)

Skye & her human, Joan

Yes, the dog was performing beautifully and I wasn’t having to work half as hard as with Honey…

…but somehow, I missed the special bond and feeling of teamwork you have with your own dog.

Bodie & his human, Michelle

It’s made me appreciate Honey a lot more and realise that – for me anyway – it’s not really about how snazzy the moves are or how slick the dog is – it’s more about the pleasure you get working together with your own dog.

I guess it’s like the difference between dancing with the national ballroom dancing champion…or dancing with your own husband!

.

I really miss my dancing friends back in Auckland terribly. :(

Here in Brisbane, although there is a dancing club, it doesn’t meet every week in a nice place like that – mostly, they go to training camps every few months or do a lot of competitions.

Moss & his human, Jan

And they take things a LOT more seriously than back in Auckland - which was much more about having fun with my friends and everybody laughing and enjoying being together.

That’s why I haven’t been doing as much dancing since we’ve moved to Australia…

But anyway, Hsin-Yi still does dancing with me on our own from time to time, in the parks or something so that’s still fun.

And she has been teaching me some new dance steps too so I’ll tell you all about that soon!

It’s always nice to mix things up and switch partners, but in the end everyone likes their own best. The pride and joy and love that must come from learning a new step or mastering a really difficult move has to be so rewarding. We wish you could find a place to go to dance like you had before -- we miss seeing you and Hsin-Yi dance together.

Honey, you are making me miss you so much!! I used to see you at Ardmore every Thursday, which I always looked forward to. But, since you moved to Brisbane, not as many people and dogs gather there for dancing as before.

I understand that the bond between handler and dog makes a huge difference. Our dancing instructor sometimes uses me as a model dog in our obedience class, but I feel somewhat awkward and tend to focus on the treat she has in her hand rather than listening to her commands. I enjoy working with my human more than working with any other humans.

    Love,
    Cinnamon

  4. Awww Honey your so beautiful. You have many great friends!

Honey, that was a very interesting post and interesting to read what it was like to change dance partners. We hope you get to do more ‘fun’ dancing.

    take care

I love that picture of Shady & her human, Sheryn.

I’d forgotten all about Bodie and feel bad about that now because I always thought he was just the cutest little dog!

  7. Oskar says:

I always knew that you & Honey were the best partners! I’m sorry there’s not a more fun dancing group close to you!

Honey you and Hsin-yi have an amazing bond with eachother, and the respect factor between you both is clearly evident! It was great to hear about your dancing again, and I’m sorry that the people are so competitive and can’t just have a bit of fun. I just recently did a big move across the US. And I really love my new home, my mom will be getting me into training as soon. I’m very excited!

  9. We love the pictures and loved hearing what it was like to switch handlers! Mom had to stop practicing any agility with Lola because she didn’t know if she should listen to Mom or Mom’s cousin Abby, her handler for agility. Lola didn’t enjoy swapping handlers much!

  10. Ashley says:

You and Hsin-Yi will be on Dancing with the Stars in no time! Well, maybe not. Talent aside, I’m not sure that show will show same-sex couples, let alone inter-species ones!

I’m looking forward to the video!

  11. Oh Honey,
Sometimes, even though I am sure you are having fun in Brisbane, it sounds like both you and Hsin-Yi are homesick for NZ!!

  12. Lucille says:

    Hi Honey, Hi Hsin-Yi,
it is so true for me and my human too… we love to work together, no matter what we are doing and even if we are no competition at all ;)
Hope you are fine with your new temporary family and hope your human is having a good time!
    Bark to you soon
    Ciao Lucille

  13. parlance says:

I guess you’re showing us that the most wonderful thing about dog activities is the friends (canine and human) that you make.

  14. Marjie says:

It’s nice that you found a little girl to play with at your last dancing meet. Hoipe you’re having fun with the pet sitter.

I saw your human swap dance movie on YouTube. It was great! What fun. Hope you come back safe and sound real soon.

  16. Can’t wait to see the new dance steps! We’ve missed following your adventures but hopefully we’re back on track.

  17. Lucille says:

Well, I believe both two and four legged did very well!
You all were able to make very difficult tricks anyway! I would have expected doggies looking astonished, sitting, going back to the owners…
We are talking professionals here ;) !
You know, it is a real problem to switch partners, because me for example know a lot of tricks with unusual names…
For example the stand in my school was being taught as “UP”. And all dogs were having issues to catch this…. My human changed it in “SU” that has a stronger sound and I caught it much better… But we are the only ones to use it in our school… so if anybody else wanted to make me do it, either he/she knows me or i do not do UP… I do SU….
Well done and thank you for sharing the video, I really enjoyed it!
    Ciao Lucille

  18. Kasha the Dainty Great Dane says:

That was a great video of you switching dance partners. I wish I had someplace to go dancing with my hooman….oh wait I don’t know how to dance…ha roo…

    Kasha the Dainty Great Dane

  19. Well, we think all you woofies did a great job with those humans you are not used to dancing with.

  20. Aww That’s too bad that the new dancing club takes things too seriously and don’t know how to have fun. :( Maybe you will be able to find a few people who have fun with it and you can start your own club where you can meet each week at a park or something. :) I can’t wait to see the video. I bet it’s great!
