Honey in hospital with acute glaucoma

Rushed Honey to the emergency vet this morning when we woke up and found her completely lethargic and unresponsive and unable to open her eyes. Very unsteady on her feet and could hardly get her in & out of the car.

Harrowing morning, dragging into afternoon, waiting around while they ran tests – it seems to be acute glaucoma, with the pressure in her left eye 3 times normal. She was in a lot of pain (massive headache), nauseous and very high heart rate, slight fever. They’re keeping her in hospital overnight to monitor her and try to bring the pressure down in her eye with medication, plus determine the cause – as she was perfectly normal at 10pm last night. Very scary how quickly these things happen.

Because of the very high pressure, there’s probably been a lot of damage to her left eye and they think she may have lost the vision in that eye :-( - and possibly may even need to have that eye removed.

To be honest, watching her stagger around this morning, I really thought we were going to lose her and would actually be relieved now just to have her back, minus one eye or not. Although it would be a tragedy for her to lose her beautiful eyes. Anyway, vet will update us in the morning…will keep you all posted when I can.

  1. Oh no Hsin-Yi, that’s awful, I hope Honey gets better soon and that she gets to come home as soon as possible.

Abby and Jack send licks and woofs.
I hope you and Paul get some rest tonight, even though you will be thinking and worrying about Honey all night.
Take care, you are all in our thoughts.
    xx Katja

  2. How awful! I hope she gets out of there soon and that no severe damage will be caused to her eye. Honey is such a wonderful dog so it would really be a shame to have anything happen to her. I wish you the best of luck!

  3. Hsin-Yi,
This is so scary. The same thing happened to my little hound. It sprung up overnight and she had already lost vision in one eye and the other was compromised by the time we brought her to the vet. I hope Honey is getting good sedation because it is very painful. Better to lose an eye than to be in pain. You have all the good thoughts I can muster. Please keep us update.

  4. Hopefully there’s no permanent damage (since you got Honey to the vet so quickly) and Honey gets to keep her eye. Whatever happens, the most important thing would be that Honey isn’t in pain. We’ll be thinking of you and waiting for updates. Take care!

  20. Poor Honey, we are so sorry to hear this news. Mom had a dog who had sudden onset glaucoma too. Lucky lost one eye right away and the other did pretty well with drops for about a year. But Lucky managed quite fine for many more years. Honey is so well trained and so very intelligent, we are hoping she too will do well. All paws crossed here for her.

  21. Oh, Hsin-Yi, how scary!!!! Poor Honey!!!! :-( I agree with you, though — after such a frightening episode it would be such a relief to be able to bring her home healthy, even if it means missing an eye.

Grendel and I will send all the positive energy we can to the beautiful girl…. though it’s in short supply around here, right now. We may have to make a very difficult decision about our 30 year-old gelding today….but that’s a story for another time.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted. You and Honey will be constantly in my thoughts!

  22. Wishing honey and you all the best and strength to get through this!!! She will recover, she is a strong and healthy girl!!! All my thoughts are with you!

It is amazing how fast this happens but even more amazing how fast they come back when they feel better. We know that Honey loosing her eye would be terrible but often the patient never knows anything happened. They adjust very quickly.

My brother Ginger just got back from an emergency vet visit for the past four days, so we understand where you are coming from! Honey will be fine! Take care of each other!!

  53. Oh Honey it’s with tears I write this to you. I am so very sad to hear of your illness. It just breaks my heart. You are such a sweet and wonderful friend and I pray your good health an vigor will be restored.

I know how panicked your Mom feels I’ve watched my own Mom stress, worry and cry over us. You are great hands having a doctor for a Dad and very well educated and trained doggie Mom and the emergency vet. I know you will be back to your normal self in no time.
