A Relentlessly Huge Farewell for a Special Friend…

Oh! My heart is so, so ouchie. I lost a wonderful, special friend today – one of my oldest blog friends – a very special doggie who will leave a HUGE hole behind him in Blogland – and in all our hearts.

Mango was a Relentlessly Huge Mastiff who lived on a big estate in a faraway place called Massachusettes but although he was on the other side of the world from me, we shared many laughs and stories as “giant doggies” together. He was my match in Great Drooliness, my partner in Great Dancing and my inspiration in Great Wisdom. He was a Great Friend.

He was a doggie that we all looked up to – with a great heart that matched his great body. For all of us who had our lives touched by Mango, it was an honour and we will always remember the way he brought a smile to our faces (or more often, a laugh to our bellies!) every time we visited his blog.

I will never forget him – and I will carry him in my heart, always.

Please take a moment to visit his blog – and leave some slobbers for his family, especially the wonderful Mango Momma who had to do the bravest, kindest and hardest thing of all and help Mango fight his Last Great Battle.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close — we two — these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

  2. oh my gosh…when I saw your post on FB I didn’t immediately realize it was Mango, and then I saw Southernmost Moose’s post and it hit me.

I am always shocked at how emotional I get when a dog from blogland passes. Even though I’d never met Mango, I feel like he was one of my own through reading his blog and hearing about his adventures. Honeydog, you’re no different.

I have tears running down my cheeks, this is a relentlessly huge loss that will leave a relentlessly huge hole.

    RIP Mango

  3. Hi Honry -- Indy Bones here. I am so sorry I have not been commenting on your blog lately -- my mom has been so very sad lately. And now…..oh no….not this. I saw my human Diane cry big tears of sadness when she read this. I think we all knew just by the “relentlessly huge” title…..it is just so sad. Mango -- run free sweet bog -- you will be missed by so many of us. Honey, thank Hsin-Yi for putting this news on your blog today.

I carry you in my heart, Mango……

  11. Hsin-Yi and Honey, I remember when you first told us about Mango and what a wonderful blog he had. He was an inspiration to all, gave us so many laughs and we could not help but fall in love with him. Nancy gave us the honour of sharing Mango’s life. We felt part of it. It’s like losing one of our own. We loved the poem. A beautiful tribute to our beautiful Uncle Mango. RIP big fella. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  14. I think all of us all over the world who follow Honey’s Blog feel like they knew Mango personally even though we never met him. Hearts are heavy and tears are flowing for this lovely fellow.

  15. Oh what a beautiful poem!
    RIP dear Mango the Mastiff…
My human starting crying and scratching my ears…she doesnt want to think about the day I must leave…

  16. Oh dear. I read the poem and now I can hardly type. Mango was happy to see me when I went into the room where his final journey was to take place. I could see the suffering in his eyes and knew it was the best decision for him even though it was so hard for me having just played and romped with him less than 32 hours earlier.

It was swift and sudden which is really all one can ask for as a dog owner. He was happy and healthy, then he was ill and facing a battle he could not win.

Mango is the fourth dog I have had to help over the bridge and every time I have been there with them. I stroked his head and told him I loved him and he laid his head down and he was gone. My heart is breaking.

So sad ….. :( RIP Mango …
