Meeting Earnest and hooray for Drake!

First of all, I want to say thank you so much to all my friends for their kind wishes and suggestion to help my bum ouchie (although I am not so sure about Homer‘s suggestion of wearing ‘granny pants’ :-? ) – and especially to my blog friends in Belgium - El’bow & Hauwii - who sent me the most gorgeous “get well” cards! *Giggle!* :P

Now, you know one of the nice things about having my blog is that it’s helped me make so many new friends since moving to Australia. I get lots of messages coming through the Contact Honey page every week and some of them have been from doggies right here in Brisbane, who have invited me to meet up for a playdate!

That’s how I met my good friend, Lupe the blue Dane…and the other day, I got a message from another blue Dane living in Brisbane.

His name is Earnest and he still only 6 months old. Actually, it was his human pup who helped him write to me. Her name is Zali and I think she is amazing because she is only 10yrs old but she already has her own blog!

She said that she loves reading my blog and would love to meet me – and Earnest would love to have a playdate!

So a couple of weeks ago, my human talked to Zali’s mummy and we arranged to meet up. Hsin-Yi suggested that we meet at the Kedron Brook dog off-leash area but not at the busy afternoon times because she hates it when it gets really crowded with lots of strange doggies and people – so we met just after lunch, when there was hardly anybody there.  Luckily it is still winter here - otherwise it would be much too hot to meet at that time of the day!

Hello Earnest! Nice to meet you!

.

Earnest had brought his whole family to meet me! There was Zali and her little sister, Poppy…

…and their mummy and daddy, who are both amazing Camera Humans and have their own company, You Can’t Be Serious!  They take photos and movies for people and their pictures are not like traditional ones but are really different & fun!

Earnest was really bouncy and excited and kept doing zoomies around me. I think he wanted to play but to be honest, this was usually my ‘nap time’ so I wasn’t feeling very energetic…

.

Oh- alright, then! You wanna play? Come and get it!

But when I really started galloping after him, Earnest started looking scared! I could hear Hsin-Yi yelling something at me like “BE GENTLE WITH THE PUPPY!” – but I was too excited by then to slow down…and then – oh no! I smacked into Earnest as I was jumping over a stream after him and rolled him over! He yelped and cried and everybody was very upset. Hsin-Yi was REALLY grumpy with me for being so rough…what does she mean? I always play like that! :-? Anyway, Earnest wasn’t hurt – just a bit stunned – but after that, he was a bit too scared to come near me anymore! :(

I tried to get him to play Tug with me but he didn’t seem to dare to grab the other end of the tug toy…

Hsin-Yi said it was all my fault ‘coz I was too rough with him – and this is why nobody ever wants to play with me… She was very grumpy because she has been trying to teach me to play more gently ever since I was a puppy – she says other Danes can play nice and gently – why do I have to thunder around like a drunk rhino?

Anyway, Zali and her family were very nice about it and said it wasn’t my fault and that when Earnest gets bigger, he will be able to play more roughly with me. Hsin-Yi said it would serve me right if Earnest had doubled in size by the next time we met – so that he could really wallop me (Huh! As if!)

Well, we had a nice walk back to the car anyway and Earnest followed me everywhere like a shadow! ;) Hsin-Yi helped Zali’s mummy & daddy with some training advice for Earnest – and I helped by showing the best way to shake your head and throw your drool as far as possible. Hmm…that pup’s got a lot to learn!

When we said goodbye, Zali said that they would love to meet up with us again and Hsin-Yi have me a dirty look and made me promise to play more gently next time! :P

Well, talking about messages from doggies – I got a really lovely message the other day from Drake the Great Dane. Drake is a regular reader of my blog – he lives with his human family and his doggie sister, Sasha, who is a rescue herding doggie. Drake’s human, Nikki, is really good about doing training with them and she had been trying to help Drake learn how to use a ramp, although they weren’t having much success. Well, do you remember I did a post about me learning to use the ramp a while back? After Nikki watched my video, she decided to start again with Drake – right from the beginning – and take it really slowly in baby steps, ‘coz you know how us Danes just cannot be rushed! ;) She emailed Hsin-Yi for some help and Hsin-Yi gave her lots of tips…and then a few weeks later, I got this message from Drake!

Hi  Honey,

Look at me!!  I’m Drake and I finally did it.  Although, I was a bit scared coming down the first time and still a bit tentative.   But look at me!!  My human drove the truck half way down the drive so the angle was almost the same as for getting in the back seat!  Now we just need to put my crate into the back and on a coolish day, we can all go walking on the trails near Lake Hefner.  Anyway, thanks again for all your help with my human!!  We are both so incredibly thankful… now I won’t always get left at home when the whole family goes on an outing!! I really don’t like that at all!!
Lots of slobbers and thanks,
Drake
.
Hi Hsin-Yi,
I am pretty proud of him!  It feels more rewarding because he’s not a “super smart breed”.  And next year, I hope to be able to take the dogs with us on vacation and trips instead of boarding.  You and Honey have helped us so much!  Not just with the emailed advice, it really is nice to talk with someone who has trained a Dane before!!  I watch the training videos (just yesterday I was watching the taking a bow training), the dancing videos (you are very brave), and (when I need a good laugh) the first agility and swimming videos.  Not to mention getting to see some great pictures of New Zealand and Australia.  So thank you very much, and please don’t let those rude people bother you.  For everyone of them, there are 10 of the people like me.
So thank you very much!!
Best Wishes,
Nicki
.
I was so happy to get that message! It is the best feeling when I can help another doggie. When Hsin-Yi helped me start my blog, she always wanted it to be more than just a doggie diary – but also a website with information to help other doggies, especially with training stuff. So it’s so nice to know that we have made a difference! :D

A Walk on Oxley Common & Dinner at Lupe’s

Well, if you remember, my friend, Lupe the Great Dane, came over to my place for pizza & brain games a while back…so a couple of weeks ago, Lupe invited me over to his place in return!

First, though, he showed me one of his favourite walks – a big park called Oxley Common where there is a lovely path through the forest and some big grassy parts to run around and play in.

It is not officially an off-leash dog park but our humans decided to be naughty and let us off for a bit…

Sitting & waiting for my release word..."OK!"

.

(I always have to Sit & Wait for my release word (“OK!”) before my humans let me off-leash – this is part of my ‘everyday manners’ training. I had to learn this from when I was a little puppy – that if I pull and lunge, I won’t get to go anywhere – but if I sit politely and wait for permission, then I get to be free! :D )

.

My humans were late – as usual! – to meet Lupe & his humans at Oxley Common so the sun was already going down when we got there and we had to do half the walk in the dark! But this did mean that we got some nice sunset photos…

.

Afterwards, we went back to Lupe’s place and he showed me ’round his pad…

Can I get you a bone, Honey?

.

He had some Scary Steps in his house which had big holes between them! I had seen some steps like that in parks before back in NZ and my leg had fallen through those holes once so I was a bit scared to walk on them…

…but Lupe was the perfect gentleman – he even went to tell the humans to come and help me when I got stuck outside and didn’t dare come up those Scary Steps to get back in the house! :P

Lupe was also the perfect doggie host – he supervised the humans making dinner in the kitchen…

.

…sorting nibbles to munch on…

.

…and pouring drinks!

While dinner was cooking, the humans decided to play a funny game where they sit and look at the TV box (Lupe’s TV box was very big & flat, not like mine at all) and turn a wheelie thing around and yell a lot.

I think it was more of a ‘boy thing’…

.

…although I did try to join in…but Paul didn’t seem to appreciate my suggestions much! What do you mean, I’m getting slobber on the wheelie?

.

Lupe is allowed on the sofa in his home, so he soon made himself comfy…

.

…and he invited me to join him! :P

I’ve never been on the furniture at home – I’ve never been allowed since a baby puppy and what we doggies don’t know, we don’t miss – so I wasn’t very sure. But my humans said it was OK – so I tried it…

…hmm…it was a bit strange and weird and I didn’t feel very comfortable. I kept trying to get off again, even though my humans said I could stay on the sofa with Lupe…it just didn’t feel right!

A lot of people think my humans are mean because they don’t let me on the sofa or in their bed - they think I would be really happy if I could just go on the sofa now – but us doggies actually like to stick to what we are used to – and since I’ve never been on the furniture at home (my humans never make exceptions or keep changing their minds - the house rules always stay the same) – I just never even think of it – it just seems so strange and abnormal! :-? My humans always come down on the floor with me or on my giant beanbag bed with me - so I don’t miss out on cuddles.

Anyway, in the end, Hsin-Yi said she would sit on the sofa with me – she even said I could sit in her lap, instead of the sofa - that made me feel much better! :)

.

Well, soon it was dinner time! My humans had brought some of my usual dinner and Lupe was very nice and let me borrow his bowl. :D But as usual – I could smell that the humans had MUCH better yummies on their table!

.

Especially when Hsin-Yi started eating something called “apple pie & ice-cream”!

.

Sadly, all the drooling and ‘Sad Eyes’ in the world did not work on my mean, greedy piggy human who kept all the yummy apple pie for herself…

…but Lupe’s human was very nice and gave us each a big chew instead! :P

Before we left, Lupe showed me these strange little creatures called ‘chicks’  which are baby chickens. Lupe’s human is a School Teacher and the chickies are to help human pups learn their lessons but they had nobody in school to look after them on the weekend so that was why they were having a sleepover at Lupe’s.

They were awfully cute – although they did make very strange squeaky sounds – and they looked a bit like tiny stuffies but my humans said I couldn’t play with them – humph!

.

OK, lastly – here is a video where you can see me and Lupe playing (yes, I am all recovered from my back ouchie and ready to play rrrrrrrough again!) and meeting the baby chicks…and also you can see me being naughty – hee! hee! For some reason, a lot of you think I am some kind of angel doggie but that is so not true! I do try to be naughty a lot of the time – sometimes, like in the video, I just pretend I can’t hear what my humans are telling me to do – hee! hee! - but my humans are just always very strict and consistent with me, so I don’t get away with much! ;) (By the way, the reason me & Lupe were not allowed to play was because we have to lie quietly after eating dinner otherwise we might get a bad sickie called ‘bloat’ which a lot of us Great Danes can get)

Anyway, my humans say it’s good to show a video which shows that I can be naughty and disobedient too!

.

Thanks, Lupe, for a great evening!! :P

* P.S. Everybody seemed to want to know what flavour ice-lolly I was eating in my last post about the ‘marching crabs’ - well, it was “Tropical Crush” (and Paul says it was “98% fat free” – hee! hee!) – and yes, it was YUMMY! :D

A Beach Romance…

Oh, thank you so much everybody for your lovely comments in my last post! Hsin-Yi really appreciates them!

Of course, we understand how busy everybody is and don’t expect you to always comment on every post! But I was just worried because I know that not everybody is as into training as I am and so maybe you were getting fed up with me talking about my training stuff! :P Anyway, I do always try to mix the posts with other fun everyday adventures too!

Well, some of you may remember that I got a paw ouchie called “tendonitis” back in March when I was on my big Great Dane playdate at Nudgee Beach and the vet said I had to be on “6 weeks rest” where I was not allowed to run or jump or have any playdates! :(

Well, the 6 weeks are finally up! Hooray!

And to celebrate, my humans took me back to Nudgee Beach so I could have a nice run off-leash…

(self-timer photo!)

.

Woohooo! It was FANTASTIC to be free and stretch my legs after 6 weeks! :D

And guess what? I made a new friend! His name is Koenig and he is a very handsome (very big!)  Dobermann Pinscher:

He came running right up when he saw me and invited me to play! :D

My humans were so happy because it is so difficult to find strange doggies that will play with me – most doggies are afraid of me and run away crying when I try to play with them (OK, I’m a bit of a rough tomboy!) or they don’t like me being bigger than them and they get grumpy and bark or growl at me… :(

People often think that you can only play best with doggies of the same size or same breed but that is not true. I have met giant doggies that are shy and scared of me – and I have met tiny Toy doggies that are scared of nothing and wrestle me to the ground! It doesn’t matter what size, shape, colour, sex or breed they are – I just need a very confident, sociable, bouncy doggie who will be happy to play rough with me! :P

Well, it looks like I found him!

.

Koenig kept doing this funny thing where he would stop and then sit or lie down in the water…

His human said that was his way of ‘cooling off’. My humans thought it was so clever and kept trying to get me to learn too but you know us Danes…we are not water dogs! OK, wading and running through water is fun but getting my body wet? Ugh! That’s almost like A Bath! 8-O (Shudder) No way!

.

Quick! Let’s get out of here, Koenig, before my humans get any more funny ideas from you!

.

A little pause…

.

…and we’re off again!

The only problem was that Koenig had not had his Operation and so after a while, he stopped playing and only wanted to sniff my bum…and then he started trying to do Humpy Rumpy with me! 8-O
Really! I’m not that kind of girl!

I tried to tell him I wasn’t interested but he just wouldn’t stop. He kept jumping up on me and his claws were scratching me and giving me ouchies on my skin…so I got a bit grumpy and gave him a Grumpy Bark. Hey! When a girl says no, she means no!

But he just kept on trying…so my humans came over to stop him and his human put him on his leash and took him away to the other side of the beach, so that he couldn’t see me. Sigh. What a shame ‘coz he was such good fun to play with! Why couldn’t he just forget about the Humpy Rumpy? His human said that his breeders had asked her not to give him the Operation so they could have puppies from him – and he has actually been a Daddy twice already! But he is still very friendly with other doggies – even male doggies – and just wants to play with everybody (well, most of the time! ;) )

Anyway, his human said that they go there every weekend so hopefully we might meet them again and I can play with Koenig again!

On the way back, we saw some beautiful horsies with their humans riding them on the beach. I got Hsin-Yi to take this photo especially for my blog friend, Pepper the Pound Pup whose human loves horses! :P (Sorry – they’re a bit small though ‘coz we didn’t get dare get too close in case they got scared of me.)

.

And then it was time to go home…

.

I had the best time and hope we get to go back again soon! :P

Mango Minster parcel, new carpet – and socialising with Human Pups!

A few weeks ago, something exciting arrived in our mailbox…a parcel for me!!

There was a big sticker on the outside saying that Australian Quarantine had opened my parcel…how cheeky of them!!! They are very strict in Australia (and NZ) about checking things coming from faraway places – lots of foods and things made from plants and animals are not allowed and they will take them away! But I was lucky - there was a note inside saying that they hadn’t taken anything from my parcel! :)

I was very excited because I could see from the writing on the parcel that it was from my blog friend, Mango the Mastiff - for me winning the Working Doggies category at Mango Minster!

And you know what? I LOVE tearing up cardboard – it is one of my favouritist things to do in the world! When I was a puppy,  my humans used to save up all cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, egg cartons – anything cardboard – for me to play with and tear up.

So of course I went a little crazy when Hsin-Yi gave me the parcel!!

Ooh! And then when I saw what was inside, I got even more excited! So many goodies!

First, there was a medal shaped like a pawprint – how cool is that! :P

And it’s even got my name on it!

And then there was a cool badge with a picture of my Relentlessly Huge friend…

But best of all – there was a tug toy! You know how much I LOVE playing tug!! :P (I can get a little crazy doing that too! Hee! Hee!)

Thank you so much, Mango, for all my goodies!!

By the way, some of you may have noticed in these photos that I have a new carpet! Yup – my humans have been worrying about me slipping on the wooden floors so they have been looking for a carpet to put on it.

First, they thought maybe they could use a carpet that Hsin-Yi’s mummy & daddy gave them for a wedding present – it is very beautiful but it is HUGE!! So big that it is even bigger than the room!

My humans tried to squeeze it in but it just wouldn’t fit and the front door couldn’t even open…

So then my humans decided to buy a smaller carpet which would only fit in the middle of the room. But Hsin-Yi wanted to go look in IKEA (which is one of her favouritist places in the world) – because she says they have nicer things there for less money paper – but the IKEA shop is very far away and you have to sit for a long time in the car machine – and Hsin-Yi wanted to go together with Paul but then Paul went away to his “conference”…

Anyway, last week, my humans FINALLY went to IKEA and came back with my new carpet!

Oooh, quick, open it!

Unwrapping the carpet was very complicated and needed lots of hard thinking…

And some good ol’ fashioned paw-work!

But finally…we did it!

Of course, I had to help make sure it was flat…

Ooh, it’s so lovely and soft! I love it!

It’s just the perfect size – I can really stretch out and there’s even space for my humans to join me! :P

Oh, before I go, I just wanted to say - a lot of you seemed very worried about me after watching the video of me with Marley kitten in the last post. Some of you thought my tail was tucked under and I was stressy – and some of you thought the Human Pups were bothering me and I might get grumpy…

Well, first, that was actually just my normal tail – I don’t hold my tail up high, like a lot of other doggies – even when I am  happy, I often do a very low, slow wag, and a lot of the time, it is tucked close to my body, like an S-shape, with the tip bending out again…when I am really scared and unhappy, I tuck it up really close to my tummy like a C-shape and put my head down and hunch my back to make myself as small as possible! :P Here is a picture of what that looks like: (this is when I have to do the Yucky Bath Thing)

.

And don’t worry – I am very used to Human Pups and don’t mind them hugging my head or jumping in my face or playing with my ears. I know they always give me treats and cuddles and I like them a lot! :D

Because my humans don’t have Human Pups of their own, Hsin-Yi was worried about me not being used to them and so she made sure I had LOTS of socialisation with Human Pups.

Even before my vaccinations were finished, she carried me to sit outside schools when the Human Pups were all coming out and I got lots of treats & pats from them.

She also took me to sit next to playgrounds in the park so I could see all the Human Pups running and shouting and screaming and jumping around me – so that it was No Big Deal.

And she let them play with my ears and paws and touch me everywhere, while she told me I was a good girl and gave me treats. This way, now I don’t mind at all if human pups play with my face or jump around me or hug me.

.

Hsin-Yi did all this especially before I got to 14 weeks old – that is called the ‘imprinting period and is the most important time in our puppy development.

If us doggies don’t get socialised to something (eg. Human Pups) during this time – even if you try to socialise us later, it might be too late – we might always be scared and anxious – and feel stressy about that thing.

But if  we are socialised to Human Pups and learn to get used to them during our imprinting time, then even if we get surprised by them later when we grow up, we will not feel too stressy and will just take it in our stride.

Of course, even after we grow up, it’s really important for us doggies to keep socialising with human pups and having nice things happen to us when  they are around, like getting yummy treats (“positive associations”) – but Hsin-Yi thinks it is also good to let Human Pups do some silly things to me,  so that I learn not to mind.  As long as she is watching us and making sure I am not feeling too stressy, it is good for me to practise Toleration of Human Pups.

This way, if one day, a Human Pup does something REALLY silly and my humans can’t stop them, I won’t get scared or grumpy and bite them by mistake. Of course, my humans are really careful and try to make sure that stressy things don’t happen to me – but sometimes, stressy things can happen in life, even if you are super careful!

For example, last year when I was on my first holiday in Rotorua back in NZ, my humans took me to have lunch in a cafe and Hsin-Yi made a nice bed for me to lie down on next to her, beside a small wall with plants. This way she thought that any Human Pups who wanted to come say hello to me would have to come from the front and I can see them coming – so nothing stressy would happen to me.

But then a naughty Boy Human Pup sneaked up behind the wall and jumped out over my head, from behind Hsin-Yi’s chair! I got a terrible fright and jumped up too but when I saw it was just a Human Pup, I remembered all the silly things they do and I didn’t get grumpy - otherwise I might have bitten him! But it is only because I have had lots of practice of Human Pups doing silly things to me – that’s why I didn’t mind. I think a lot of other doggies would have bitten that naughty Boy Human Pup.

Of course, it is not our fault if we bite Human Pups doing silly things – they should NOT do silly things to us doggies – but it is very unfair and if we ever bite a Human Pup, then it is us doggies who get blamed and in Big Trouble (in NZ, doggies get put to sleep!) – so that is why my humans think that the best way to protect me is to help me learn not to mind them doing silly things to me (Hsin-Yi says this is called “de-sensitisation”).

Otherwise, the only other way to protect me is to keep me at home all the time and never take me out to any fun places – which would be horrible! I would much rather go out to fun places with my humans, even if it means that I have to practise Toleration of Human Pups! :D

Anyway, so that is why the Human Pups were doing so many silly things to me in the video with Marley Kitten and Hsin-Yi didn’t tell them to stop – she knew I wasn’t feeling stressy about it and she thought it was good practice for me.

But it is true that other doggies may not be as well-socialised as me with Human Pups and so even if I don’t mind, it is important for those Human Pups to learn not to do silly things with doggies in general. Hsin-Yi was so busy watching me with Marley that she forgot to tell them that – so thank you for reminding us! She will make sure to tell them next time we see them – so they don’t keep on doing silly things like stick their faces in other doggie’s faces! :P

* We are behind on Google Reader again – so sorry! – please bear with us and we will come round to visit as soon as we can! :)

Great Dane playdate at Nudgee Beach!

I have always been very envious of all my Great Dane blog friends who live in that faraway place called America because they always get to go to “Great Dane meet-ups” where they can play with lots of other Great Danes.

When we were living in Auckland, I hardly ever met another pet Dane like me and didn’t have many Dane friends to play with at all…but since we have moved to Australia, I have made lots of Dane friends and last weekend, I got to go to my very first ‘Great Dane meet-up’! :D

.

.

My humans took me to Nudgee Beach again where we met up with Lupe the blue Dane and his humans…

…my other friend, Loki the merle Dane and her humans -

…and another black Dane called Nigella (who happens to be Loki’s sister) and her humans…

Our humans told us that we had to wait until a special time called “low tide” when the waves would go away from the beach and then there would be lots of space to run and play! Lucky for us, last weekend that special time was on Sunday morning when our humans were not doing their Work Thing!

Here we are just waiting to go onto the beach…wow, look how far the waves have gone away!

.

First, a bit of sniffing…

…and modelling…

.

OK – time to get down to the serious business of playing!

Well, I hate to admit it but  it was pretty hard work keeping up with these young ones! I mean, at 6 & 1/2, I’m three times older than them – but that didn’t stop me from trying! :D

The only thing was, my front leg which got sore after that playdate with Lupe, started hurting a bit again and made me walk a bit funny. Hsin-Yi called me over and made me do a Down Stay to give my leg a rest but it was really hard staying still when the others were still running around and playing! :(

(Thanks to Loki's human for this great photo!)

After I rested a bit, I felt much better again and so when Hsin-Yi was busy chatting with the other humans and not watching me, I quickly jumped up and ran off to join the others again! :P

Even better, I found my football which my humans had brought for me!

Then my leg started hurting again and this time, I was really limping so Hsin-Yi got strict and said I HAD to remain a Down Stay and let it rest – no more running around! :(

But at least I wasn’t lonely. There were lots of other doggies out enjoying the beach and lots of them came running up to say hello to me – my favourite was a friendly little Pug!

(I like Pugs a lot and have had lots of Pug friends – my best Pug friend was Bertie, who used to like to give me head massages! :P )

Hsin-Yi thinks that Pugs are the cutest thing and if she was ever going to have a Toy breed, that’s what she would get – because they have wrinkly foreheads too (and she just LOVES LOVES LOVES wrinkled foreheads! :) )

After a bit, I felt better again but Hsin-Yi said definitely no more running for me (sob!) so I had to make do with some massages from the other humans…

And then Hsin-Yi wanted to get a photo of us Danes altogether…well, us girls all got lined up with our best angles to the camera and we just needed Lupe to get in the shot…hmm…well, what do you expect from a boy??!! :D

The other Danes don’t have to live with a crazy camera human like me so they haven’t had as much practice posing for the camera machine and all sitting still at the same time – so we didn’t get a very good photo in the end but it wasn’t bad! ;)

After that, the humans said it was time to go  home…

We were really sad to leave but we made lots of plans for the next playdate!

(Thanks to Loki's human for this photo!)

.

Time for a quick family photo before we left!

.

I had such a great time – I can’t wait to go to Nudgee Beach again!

Click here for more information on the dog off-leash areas of Nudgee Beach

* My leg was still sore when I got home so my humans decided to take me to the vet. Hsin-Yi was worried that it might be the ‘arthritis sickie’ which lots of us giant doggies can get, especially as we get older…stay tuned for the next post to find out what happened at the vet!

Playdate with Lupe & the ‘Slow Dane’ Challenge

As I said before, I seem to keep bumping into so many more Danes here in Australia! After I posted about not being able to find nice dog parks in Brisbane, I got a lovely message from Lupe, a big blue Great Dane boy – telling me about some dog-friendly places and inviting me to meet up for a playdate! :P

So a couple of weeks ago, my humans took me to the Kedron Brook Dog Off-leash Area to meet Lupe & his humans for a playdate….and we had a fantastic time!

It was so nice to finally meet another doggie big enough that I didn’t have to worry about squashing him by mistake when I was running & wrestling – and who wasn’t afraid to play with a rough tomboy like me! ;)

.

.

It was also great to have a big buddy along for my walk…

.

We did lots of exploring together…

.

And also exchanged sniffs with a couple of other doggies…

I always see lots of Ridgebacks - like my blog friend, Nala – whenever I go to the parks…they must be a really popular doggie here in Australia!

Then I introduced Lupe to one of my favourite toys: my ‘Udder Tug’ that I brought with me from NZ!

(For anyone who missed my 1st post about these, they are the rubber things that attach to cows’ teats for milking.

When the farmers are done with them, in NZ, they sell them in pet stores as dog toys and every doggie I know goes mad for them!

They are lovely and soft to chew on but strong at the same time – and smell deliciously of cow! :D )

Lupe’s humans said he hadn’t really learnt how to play Tug properly yet – he was such a gentleman, he wouldn’t really pull!

So I decided to step in and show him how it’s done!

Yeah! Grrrrrrr!

(Hsin-Yi says I’m a terrible rough tomboy and why can’t I be dainty, gentle & ladylike, like all the other girl Danes? Bah! Who wants to be ladylike? How boring! )

Lupe REALLY liked my ’Udder Tug’ - but was too polite to come and take it off  me! :P Such a gentleman! So I kept teasing him to come and get it:

Cooooome on, Lupe! You know you want it…

Aw, come on, Lupe! The whole metro-dog thing is very nice but sometimes a girl wants a bit of ‘alpha-male’!!

.

Ooh, he got it!

.

Awwwww…give it back…

.

Hah! Just to remind you that girl dogs are ALWAYS the boss! :D

Of course, am older too – I’m 6 & 1/2 and Lupe is only 2, so maybe he was respecting his elders – hee! hee!

Actually, my humans thought I did very well for a ‘middle-aged gal’ – galloping and jumping around like a maniac puppy, chasing Lupe, chasing my tug toy, leaping over the water pipes, running through the long grass, jumping down the river bank, clambering up again…they said it was embarrassing that Lupe was calmer than me!

.

On the way back, I decided to go for a cooling dip in the water. Lupe wasn’t very sure about going in the brook so I had to show him…

.

Come on in, Lupe! The water’s lovely!

,

Yeah – you see?

.

OK – come on! How about one last play?

It was starting to get dark by then so the humans said it was time to go home…such a shame! I could have gone on forever! :D

(Hsin-Yi says: Actually, Honey was walking a bit funny the next day and we were horrified that she might be starting to develop hip problems but she didn’t seem to be in any pain and didn’t mind her legs being manipulated in any direction, was eating fine, could get up from lying down very quickly & with no problems, etc…so we decided to just rest her & see. No mad running for a few days – just gentle, pavement walks. Well, she was fine & normal again within a day. Guess she must have just overdone it on the playdate and was a bit stiff - at her age, she can’t hoon around endlessly anymore without paying for it the next day! :)   When she was young, we would often have several playdates like this in succession but now I think she is going to be rationed to one every couple of weeks and TRY to get her to slow down and take it a bit easier! There ARE gentle ways to play too, you know!

*sigh* I know it’s only a matter of time before my crazy, rough, tomboy girl will succumb to arthritis – she is practically asking for it, the way she plays and chases balls and does everything so “violently” and of course, all giant breeds are prone to it – but I do hope it holds off for as long as possible so she can continue her exhuberant enjoyment of life – you just can’t help but smile when you watch her :D  )

Well, I had a great time with Lupe and I can’t wait for our next playdate!

OK – before I go, I must tell you about this fun thing I am doing called the “Slow Dane Challenge“. It is to help support doggies like me who are – ahem - a bit slow in training sometimes, not like those super clever and fast breeds like Border Collies - and to encourage our humans to do more training with us, without feeling embarrassed that we’re taking a while to learn things. (You might think I know a lot of tricks but it usually takes me MONTHS to learn them! :P )

The Slow Dane Challenge was started by a Great Dane here in Australia called Dante and his human, to encourage more Danes to do more training – ‘coz most Danes just grow up into couch potatoes and their humans think potatoes aren’t trainable.  Now, it has been expanded to include non-Dane doggies too. You can join Dante & his human – and lots of other Danes (& non-Danes) at the Dogz Online Forum – Dane Thread (http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=188608 )

We all get a set time to learn a new trick (eg. 2 weeks) and we all have to do lots of training in that time and post our videos to the forum to show each other – and then at the end of the time, everybody votes for the winner of the challenge!

They have had 2 challenges so far: the 1st was learning to Pivot and the 2nd was the Bomb-proof Down Stay. You can see the videos of these past challenges here: http://www.dmantugs.com.au/challenges.htm

I am joining the 3rd challenge now – which is learning to jump over my human’s arms and here is a video of my training so far! :D (I actually started learning this many months ago back in Auckland but only had 1 session, then had my 2nd session last week.)

.

So how do you think I’m doing so far? Hsin-Yi says she is not sure her arms will survive the challenge!

Puppy Time: My 1st training lessons…

My human, Hsin-Yi, was hoping to do her own post about the Ian Dunbar seminar that she went to and show you some of the things she’s tried with me since coming back with all his training tips – but she has too much work at the moment to write a big post or edit lots of video footage…

So I thought I’d show you this old video instead – of Puppy Me! :P This was from my first 2 weeks in my new home with my humans and shows Hsin-Yi doing some of my 1st trainings with me.

She wasn’t a very good trainer then, though – she never remembered to praise/reward me after she told me off for something!  It is really important that humans praise us lots if we stop doing any naughty thing as soon as they tell us off – so that we learn what is the RIGHT thing to do.  (for example, chewing shoes – “NO!” – stops chewing – “Good girl! Good girl!” + maybe treat). Just shouting at us for doing the wrong thing won’t teach us anything. You have to also praise/reward us when we’re doing the right thing (even if it is just STOPPING whatever naughty things we were doing)

Anyway, so you see, Hsin-Yi made lots of mistakes with me when I was a puppy as I am her 1st dog and she had lots to learn! But she read lots – especially Dogs Today magazine from the UK – and kept learning about the right way to train us doggies and all about ‘canine behaviour’ – so that slowly, we both got better! :D

I was 9 weeks old in this video and about 10kg/22lbs (Lemon was about 1kg). My humans thought my legs looked like chunky little tree trunks and my enormous knuckles & paws were hilarious! :P Can you see how my collar was much too big for me? My humans had to tuck the extra strap back into the collar…but don’t worry, I quickly grew into that collar! I was putting on about 2kg per week at that stage! ;)

And of course, you can see my kitty sister, Lemon, being really naughty and ambushing me and teasing me to chase her and distracting me from my training lessons…

* Hsin-Yi had to change the “Paw” command after she realised that it sounded too much like Paul’s name! So now she uses the command “Shake”. The first command I actually learnt was “SIT” which my humans taught me on my 1st day in my new home.

Visit to Nudgee Beach!

Remember my big trip with my humans up the Sunshine Coast to find a dog-friendly beach? Well, my humans did hear about another beach which was much closer to Brisbane – so back in January, we went there to check it out!

It was called Nudgee Beach and it is not officially a dog off-leash beach, although us doggies are allowed to go on the sand at one end of the beach, when the waves go away at a time called “low-tide”.

It was also a strange beach because instead of sand, there the ground was sort of muddy and there were lots of strange trees growing there called “mangroves“…

.

…which had pointy little roots that poke out from the ground around it – OUCH! 8-O

.

But once we got past the mangroves, there was loads of lovely open space to run in! Yay!

There was nobody else on the beach that day so no other doggies to play with! :( But that’s OK because my humans played my favouritist game in the world with me: chasing my tennis ball!

I used to be able to chase that ball forever but I have to admit, now that I’m a “middle-aged gal” for a giant breed, I do get a bit puffed after 3 or 4 throws and have to slow down for a rest…

.

…or maybe a bit of exploring…

(my humans nearly had a heart attack when they first saw this because they had heard so much about a scary water monster in Australia called “crocodiles” and from a distance, they thought this was one! Hsin-Yi said I would have made a nice meal and the croc probably wouldn’t have had to eat again for a week!)

But don’t worry – I inspected lots of logs and other weird shapes poking out of the water and none of them were crocodiles! :P

I had a great time at Nudgee Beach, even if it wasn’t a proper sand beach and my humans said they will take me back again soon, although they will have to look for a time when the tide is out again. Maybe next time I can go with one of my new Dane friends!

My humans also said they will put some of that stinky insect perfume called “repellent” next time ‘coz they were being bitten to death by all the mosquitoes and other bugs there…especially Hsin-Yi, who came home with 12 bites!

Nudgee Beach Dog Off-leash Area:

The beach adjacent to the new fishing platform on Kedron Brook at Nudgee Beach has been approved to be Brisbane’s first off-leash dog swimming area: a small beach near the mangroves. There is a picnic area, fishing platform, BBQs and lots of parking.

From Nudgee Rd, drive onto O’Quinn St and follow to the very end, by mangrove swamps. There is a path through the mangroves leading onto the beach at low tide.

* The large sand flats (at low tide) in front of the Nudgee Beach Reserve (via Fortitude Street) are NOT a Council dog off-leash area.

There is also a ‘conventional’ fenced exercise park with little tunnels, ramps etc. at the start of O’Quinn St.

'Fun with a bandana' and a parcel from Chicago!

* Thinking of my friend, Max Dog in South Africa and his family, at this difficult time – wishing them happiness, peace and love in their time together.

.

Can you believe it – twice in the last few days, the Postman Human stopped by our house and said he had a package for ME! :D

Max & JD the Schnauzer Brothers

How exciting! The first package was from my blog friends, Max & JD, who live in a faraway place  called England. Their humans had been travelling to another faraway place called Egypt and they had got a little present for me from there…a personalised bandana!

See? The bandana has my name on it written in hieroglyphics‘ which are special writing pictures used by humans living in Egypt a long time ago…how cool is that?! :P

Well, as some of you know, I have a LOT of bandanas - my humans love to put bandanas on me when we go out walking – and this new one is a great addition to my collection! I couldn’t wait to try it on…and then I had an idea! Remember that clicker training game “Fun with a Box”? Well, I could do my own version: ‘Fun with a Bandana’! ;)

Starting with the traditional look…

Then how about a bit of rustic ‘peasant style’?

Or I could do a cute retro Minnie Mouse look:

Or how about an elegant corsage?

Then there is the hot pink miniskirt… (oh, la! la! )

…or maybe a bit of Ascot flair - work those accessories, dahling!

Not forgetting (Hsin-Yi’s favourite!) – the evil Emperor from ‘Star Wars’ (er, pink version!) !

"The force is strong in you, young Jedi...but do not underestimate the power of the PINK Side"

.

Kasha the Dainty Dane

And as if that wasn’t all exciting enough, I then had another package from my blog friend, Kasha the Dainty Dane, who lives in a faraway place called Chicago.

This was a little thank you for me helping her to set up her blog…you’re very welcome, Kasha! :)

Ooh, I love opening presents…

What beautiful wrapping paper!

Yay! A tug toy! I LOVE tug toys!

This is me doing my “Happy Dance”: When I’m happy and excited – like when my humans come home - I always have to grab something in my mouth and do a little “prancing walk” around the room…do you do this too? :P

.

Nothing like a good game of tug! Grrrrrrr!

Of course, I still have to remember my manners even when I’m playing tug – like I must always immediately let go when my humans say “Give” – I learnt this from when I was a baby puppy, otherwise they just won’t play with me anymore and it is no fun. I also learnt that I must never put my teeth (even accidentally!) on their skin – if I did, the tug would “go dead” and my humans won’t play with me anymore…so now I’m really careful when I’m grabbing the tug toy.

Some people think that we doggies must never win a tug game otherwise we might get a bit bossy but it’s no fun if we lose all the time! My humans let me win sometimes – as long as I will always let go when they tell me to. And they always end the game when it’s still really exciting, so I know that they are the boss and they decide when to start and stop.

A lot of humans think that it is bad for us doggies to play tug – some even have silly ideas about it making us dominant - but as long as we are taught these important rules for playing, then it is a great game which most doggies LOVE playing and is a fantastic way for us to bond with our humans. :D

And guess what? There was also a present for Hsin-Yi in the box: special cards with our names and pictures on them! Isn’t it gorgeous! We love it! Personalised bandana…and now personalised stationary too! :D

Whew! And then as if all that wasn’t enough excitement, I also found out that I had got 2nd place at Niamh’s ‘Train Your Dog Photo Contest’ and the Reader’s Choice Award in the MangoMinster ‘Hard-Working Group’!

Congratulations to all the other winners and thank you to Niamh and Mango for hosting such fun competitions! :P

A real dog park at last!

* Voting has started for the Hard-Working Group over at Mango Minster – head over and check out the entries! (including ME hard at work modelling)

* Also – don’t forget voting for Tucker’s Sit-Stay competition - I’m entry #18! Voting closes 6th Feb! :D

My new home, Brisbane, is a nice city but it is not as dog-friendly as Auckland. There are lots of places where dogs are not allowed or not welcome, and what’s more, can you believe that “dog parks” here are just small, fenced areas in the corners of the main park?! 8-O

What? You call that a dog park?? That’s like a dog prison yard! There’s hardly any space to stretch your legs – especially for a big dog like me – one gallop and I’m practically crashing into the fence on the other side!

Besides, in all the parks we visited, we saw hardly anybody using the rest of the park around us – it was all empty – which made it seem even MORE unfair that us doggies are squished into these small corners…

Back in New Zealand, if a park was a “dog park”, that meant we doggies could run free in the WHOLE park. If humans didn’t like being with dogs, there were lots of other parks which were not dog parks where they could jog or cycle or walk, without being bothered by dogs running around them.

See? Now THIS is what I call a dog park – all 20 hectares of it, with ponds to wade in, rabbit holes to sniff, woods to explore, hills to climp and lots of space to run free! :)

Me at Waiatarua Reserve, Auckland

We had about 5 parks like this within 10 minutes drive of our home – I guess we were really spoilt in Auckland and didn’t realise how lucky we were!

My human, Hsin-Yi, says that lots of other countries have these small, fenced dog parks like here in Brisbane, especially in the faraway place called America – but she really doesn’t like them. Not just because they are so small either. She did an article for one of her dog magazines on “dog parks” last year and she found lots of reasons why such small, fenced dog parks are a bad idea:

  • putting a lot of us doggies who are strangers into a confined area is just asking for trouble. Especially if our humans are just standing around, gossiping, because then we feel ‘braver’ with our pack behind us and so we are more likely to become bullies or pick a fight with other doggies.
  • humans in these fenced, small dog parks usually just stand around or sit around gossiping, which is unhealthy for both the humans and their doggies. We saw a LOT of fat dogs in these parks! (And fat humans!) It is much more natural – and safe – and healthy – for us to keep moving – walking, exploring, passing things – just like we would as a pack on a ‘hunt’ in the wild.
  • these parks are only really suitable for young playful doggies (usually under 2) who are still puppies really – most adult dogs do not like to be crowded into such small spaces with other strange dogs and again, it is not the natural way we would go for a walk.
  • even sociable puppies and dogs can have a bad experience in the dog park if another irresponsible human brings an aggressive, out-of-control dog and many pups have had their temperaments “ruined” because of an attack in a small dog park.
  • entering these small, enclosed parks is very stressful – again, it is not the natural way we would meet other strange doggies in a big open space, where we can decide what personal space we are comfortable with and curve around each other…oh no, Hsin-Yi was horrified when we tried to go into one dog park and the doggies already in it came rushing up to the fence, barking really aggressively (and their humans didn’t try to stop them!) and then we had to enter through a narrow gate where they all rushed up straight to my face and I was still restrained on my leash…it all made me feel very uncomfortable and wary, especially because I have been attacked twice before and had to go to the vet to get stitches. :(  Really! The other owners should control their dogs and not let them rush up to new dogs coming in through the narrow gates but of course, lots of humans don’t understand dogs at all and think that we should all be instant best friends doing group hugs like in a Disney movie!

So anyway, my humans have been trying to find a real, proper dog park for me but we were getting very depressed because we went to SO many parks in Brisbane and they were all the same! All small, fenced things with badly-behaved doggies and ignorant owners!

And then finally we heard about a park which runs alongside a small river called Kedron Brook and we were so happy when we got there because we saw this!

Yay! A REAL, unfenced, PROPER dog park!! :D The Kedron Brook Dog Off-Leash Area runs for a long way next to the water (on one side of the brook only - north side) so us doggies can REALLY run and stretch our legs and sniff and explore.

It also means that everyone keeps walking – so we do meet other doggies as we pass each other and we may play a bit but then we hurry to keep up with our pack, so our encounters are short and sweet and safe!

And then when we have met several times, with good, short, positive experiences each time, then we can have a longer play together and everything will be fine because we know each other better now and trust each other. This is the correct way to introduce us doggies and let us make friends!  :)

Because there aren’t any other dog parks like this in Brisbane, everyone wants to come here and lots of humans come from very far away to bring their doggies here – so it was a bit crowded!

Hsin-Yi says walking along the park was like walking on a dog multi-lane highway! We never saw this many doggies in a park back in Auckland because there were always so many nice, open reserves there to choose from that everybody didn’t have to all cram into the same park.

So I got to meet lots of new doggies and do lots of bum-sniffing…

There was a really big handsome boy who was a Ridgeback-Malamute-cross:

And a dainty little Italian Greyhound:

A friendly Staffie…

…a Lab playing hide-an-seek…

…and a cute little black Mini-Schnauzer who reminded me of my blog friends, Max & JD, Oskar, Sasha and most of all, Gus!

But my favourite new friend was a brown doggie who came racing up to me and jumped up, inviting me to play! :D

My humans were so happy to see us running around together because it is SOOOOO hard to find playmates for me. Because I am such a confident, big doggie, most other dogs seem to get really scared when they see me – a lot of them just roll over to show their tummies and freeze – and some of them even yelp and cry and run away if I try to do a play bow! Sheesh! I haven’t even touched you!

Plus I like to play REALLY rough too – galloping and wrestling everywhere. Sorry, that “gentle giant” label doesn’t really fit me! ;) Ever since I was a puppy, my humans have been trying to teach me to play gently but this is the way I like to play! :P So I need a really confident, sociable doggie, who is not afraid of a bit of rough-housing, to play with me. (And it’s not always the size – my best playmate was my BFF Ombre the Schnauzer who was only 1/4 the size of me but he played REALLY rough and bounced off anything to come back for more! ) That’s why I hardly ever find a good playmate when I go to the dog park and this makes my humans very sad.

But that day, I did! :D

And we had a grrrrrrrrreat time! :D

Well, after all that running around, it was time for a cooling dip in the brook…

My humans tried to get me to swim (sheesh – they’re ALWAYS trying to get me to swim!) but even though I waded out, the water never really got deep enough for me because I am really tall and have very long legs…

Still, it was nice to cool off in the water…

And then to have the lovely cool breeze dry my coat afterwards…

What a great place and I’m so happy to have found a proper dog park at last! :)
